Hi,
I just registered on this site because my Mom started hemodialysis on June 17, 2008.  I have really enjoyed reading all the posts and getting all the helpful hints and info!

Mom started dialysis 6/2008 with perma cath due to fistula failure;  second fistula surgery end of October, 2008; Hoping this fistula will work!

Pyelonephritis (began at 8 mos old)
Home haemo 1980-1985 (self-cannulated with 15 gauge sharps)
Cadaveric transplant 1985
New upper-arm fistula April 2008
Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr.  2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

 :waving; momsonhd, my mom is predialysis and will be doing hemo also. Hopefully she has a while to go before starting. This group is very supportive. They'll make you laugh when you need it, give you strong advice when you need it, cry with you, and most of all you can talk to us anytime!

Lost vision due to retinopathy 12/2005, 30 Laser Surg 2006
ESRD diagnosed 12/2006
03/2007 Fantastic Eye Surgeon in ND got my sight back and implanted lenses in both eyes, great distance & low reading.
Gortex 4/07.  Started dialysis in ND 5/4/2007
Gortex clotted off Thanksgiving Week of 2007, was unclotted and promptly clotted off 1/2 hour later so Permacath Rt chest.
3/2008 move to NC to be close to children.
2 Step fistula, 05/08-elevated 06/08, using mid August.
Aug 5, 08, trained NxStage and Home on 9/3/2008.
Fistulagram 09/2008. In hospital 10/30/08, Bowel Obstruction.
Back to RAI-Latrobe In Center. No home hemo at this time.

Hi I'm back again!  My Mom was in a rehab facility until  the end of September.  She was home for 1 week and fell and broke her pelvis!  Two weeks later she had a second fistula surgery and the surgeon thinks this one will work!  I hope so- but he says it may need to be elevated for it to be used properly.  It is brachiocephalic  has anybody had to have this "elevation" doe?

hi, sorry to hear about your mom. and of her injuries, hope she's doing better,
i had to have a second fistula as well. some kind now as your mom, still waiting to see if they can use it as it's only been 2 weeks, but i know some people in my unit have to have there's elevated cause it works better that way. each fistula is different so some will have to be and some won't. as long as it works for her, that is the key thing. good luck, and your mom if very lucky to have such a supportive and understanding daughter.  it may not always be easy, but you'll always be glad you are there for here. even when your frustrated. trust me on that, my mom is gone, and i am so glad i was able to help her and be there for her.

I have the opposite problem, most days I need my arm down in the chair next to me for my pressures to  be OK.  Everyone is different!

I think she means that the vein needs to be elevated from deep within the upper arm to put it closer to the surface of the skin, rather than that the arm needs to be elevated.
