Hi all!

Does anyone know if there is any correlation between UF on PD and UF on HD? I dialysed (Haemo) today and the machine took two litres off me, and on PD I didn't even take 2 litres off in a WEEK! I feel absolutely dreadful this evening and have been having cramps and my stomach hurts quite badly. I went to bed an hour ago but couldn't sleep so I came on here for a bit of a rant and to ask this question!

If you are not used to pulling that much fluid then yes, you are going to hurt.  Get a good night;s sleep and it will help.

It seems as though too much fluid was removed.  Did they take you below your dry weight?  Also, PD is (in general) a much gentler form of dialysis than hemodialysis, so you are probably not accustomed to rapid fluid removal.

Sorry you are feeling so poorly and hope you are feeling better soon.  :cuddle;

Hi yes they took me almost a kilo below my dry weight, as I'm new to HD I didn't ask  :banghead; stupid I know, but I need to feel a bit more informed before I ask them anything (had it been PD I would have been questioning them from the word go!)

Feeling a bit stupid cos I let them do it without questioning them first and now I'm paying the price!!

 :'( Sorry you're feeling so badly, but if they took you below your dry weight, you need to add a bit more fluid and sodium. I know it sounds odd, but just a little saltine craker and a drink of broth may help alot. I'm not a nurse, but I play one at home...try a bit to help soothe your tummy...and next time- speak up- you are the best judge of how your treatment should go...

Often it depends on your UF profile. Most hemodialysis machines have settable profiles that tell the machine how fast to remove the extra fluid. Most people feel better when most of the fluid is removed in the early part of the session when you are least likely to cramp or crash.

Thanks everyone, it's great to know you're all out there! Even in the middle of the night!!

I do PD so cant tell you what you need to ask them , but if they do it again ,'drink'! as you have found out you are feeling dehydrated because they took to much off you , so drinking is the quickest way to feel a bit better. I would certainly bring it up with them next time. I also noticed you are quite new to the site , where in the UK are you ?

Hi Kickstart,
I'm in Chester, I'm back for another 'sesh' of dialysis today but had a horrendous day yesterday, felt like i was hungover! I tried to drink lots but had a ferocious (non blood pressure related)headache which I still have the remains of this morning. Am going to talk to the nurses today and get all the info because at the moment I'm not very well informed so can't form a decent argument against taking so much off except for the rather pathetic 'I feel rubbish' argument, which never washes with hospital staff! :rofl;

Thanks Kickstart! Nice to know there's IHD people close by!

I had a chat with the nurse yesterday and asked if we could experiment with taking off a minimal amount. So we agreed on 600ml. I feel so much better! I'm not sure what my weight will be on Friday!!!! But we'll see.

 :cheer:

Yay!

Life's a bitch and then you go on dialysis!

« Reply #13 on: September 29, 2008, 04:48:52 AM »

Sorry Carla I missed this post originally and have just seen it. It sounds very much like you only need to dialyse to take off mainly toxins and not much fluid. But as usual they start you off on a one size fits all regime. Typical.  :Kit n Stik;

By the way I'm only down the road in Stockport.  :ukflag;
