hi,

my dad is 73 years old in march they found he had a 5.5 cm  abdominal aneurysm he was asymptomatic very active in fact last June he was awarded first place champion golf coach for the blind.  The surgery went perfectly no major complications Fortunately we live just outside of Boston and he was treated at Mass General Hospital

Surgery was on a Friday the following Thursday he had developed HIT (heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia)  he did not get a bad batch of hep-arin as many assume he is allergic to heparin.  a synthetic med was ordered and he was released one week to the day of his surgery.

That Monday at home a visiting nurse came he was very swollen all over and yellow (jaundice) ultimately he had acquired a hemolytic reaction (red blood cell breakdown) which in turn caused his kidneys to fail.  Since then he was readmitted to the hospital about three times and has been on dialysis since.  At first they seemed to indicate that they were hopeful kidney function would return his renal studies showed no blocked renal arteries and they never could figure out why or what actually occurred.

We are now dealing with diet and symptoms of  CRF.  My dad is a fighter  an ex marine who fought for our country in Korea, a retired firefighter ,quit smoking in 1990 , quit drinking alcohol in 1979 but right now no sleep is really getting to him also he is exhibiting symptoms of restless leg and perhaps some anxiety related to breathless ness

He does have COPD has seen pulmonologist,  has cardiac echo booked for Thursday (in May he had one it was good) has dialysis 3week and PT 2x week. His strength is returning slowly.  I am hoping to get him a little happier with more tasty meals He misses tomato sauce and summer garden tomato sandwiches,  hates garlic

I just hope to find tid bits here.  I did see alot of similar symptoms he is exhibiting and reminded him how horrible last month was with bowel habits ( that has improved ) I told him about all the people I read about that complain about a lot of the same stuff as him.  We will be speaking with the nephro guy this week.
