Hello I have a question for all who are on home hemo and have a graft or fistula.  I will be started my home hemo this coming Wednesday, my training is done, and I was just wondering what type of Tourniquet do you use?  I have an upper arm fistula so I can't use a bp cuff, so I use the velcro type and I hate it.  It either pinches my arm or I pull my vein all out of whach whne I tighten it.  Just wondering if anyone has a better suggestion.

I just have the one the nurses use..that long plastic stretchy thingy...I don't like it but until we invent something better I guess I have to use it...my fistula moves so I said I'm going to get a salad tong, bend it curvier so I can grab the fistula and keep it still.... :Kit n Stik;

I have an elasticized, fairly thick, about an inch wide, fabric tourniquet with a clip that fastens together, then when you tighten it there is a release clip that loosens it and it can be easily done with one hand.  I loosen it (but it is still attached together) in between needles and then it can be tightened again easily with one hand.  Also very easy to tighten just a tad more if required, in the middle of things.  If I position the "buckle", right over the vein it helps to stop the vein rolling away from me.  I am still in-centre (self-care) but this would be my tourniquet of choice.  It was a little tricky to get used to at first but now it's a snap to use, now that I've figured out how to attach it together and which side to put the self-release clip on for ease of operation.

I'll check the make tomorrow and re-post.  I'll take a photo eventually too (I just have to figure out how to download my pics from my new camera to my computer....that could take a while) LOL

The tourniquet is called The Green Tourniquet, made by Prameta and distributed here by Merrick Dental Inc. (800-363-3368).  Don't know how much they cost as they give them to us in-centre free and we each have our own.

If anyone does get one, don't be discouraged if it seems complicated at first.  Once you figure it out it's quite easy.
