Lost cat returned home after nine years

Wed Sep 10, 9:17 AM ET

LONDON (Reuters Life!) - A British couple have been reunited with their missing cat after nine years, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) said on Wednesday.

Dixie, a 15-year-old ginger cat, disappeared in 1999 and her owners thought she had been killed by a car.

She was found less than half a mile from her home in Birmingham after a concerned resident rang the animal charity to report a thin and disheveled cat who had been in the area for a couple of months.

RSPCA Animal Collection Officer Alan Pittaway checked her microchip and confirmed it was Dixie. She was returned to her owners, Alan and Gilly Delaney, within half an hour.

"In 29 years of working for the RSPCA I have never seen anyone so excited and happy as Mrs Delaney," Pittaway said. "It made my day to return Dixie to her owners."

The couple were "overjoyed" to be reunited with their missing cat after so many years.

"Dixie's personality, behavior and little mannerisms have not changed at all," said Gilly Delaney. "We don't think she has stopped purring since she came back through the door."

The RSPCA hope the story will encourage owners to have their pets microchipped.

Okarol, that is so heart-warming.  It makes you wonder, though, where that poor cat was all those years. . .

That is so great :) I had Celeste microchipped when I got her (well actually it is the RSPCA shelter requirement all cats leave with microchip and desexed).. at least I would be confident if she was found (and not adopted!!!) that she would be returned to me because of the chip :) It is a good thing for cats and they don't even care that it's in them :)

Slugger and Zuko are in Ike territory and probably sense that danger is approaching.

Mango Water? Watch out for fluids AND potassium! :)

Cats (and other animals) are very sensitive to nature. Remember how the elephants in Thailand rampaged before the Tsunami hit? They *knew* and ran for higher ground.....

I am glad my kitty is snuggled asleep on the bed. I guess weather here is going to be OK :)

Male cat has a new nickname, "Cheeto". I had a bag of baked Cheeto's by my couch while working on homework. I heard some noise and he had his head stuck inside the bag eating Cheeto's :urcrazy; He never ate human food here before in the 3 years we have had him. He doesn't do this with his cat treat bag. So now we have a Cheeto loving cat that drinks water out out of a bottle, what's next, a beer and him watching a whole NASCAR race? :rofl;

Wonder what it was like with his previous owners ??? Act's like a dog, wants to play with dogs, likes to sit out side and dig in the dirt like there is buried bone, and then he above mentioned stuff. Quite an animal!

That is a cute story Chris!  My cats amaze me all the time of the different "human foods" they like!  I usually always give them a "taste" of whatever I am eating just to see if they will like it or not but they still eat their own food as well.

Well it looks like we might be getting another cat in Feb instead of a dog. Came home from trip and mom asked me what I thought of having another cat, a bermese or berman something. I said I would rather have a dog, but in the back of my mind I'm thinking my mom is becoming the cat lady and why did my dad cave in to not getting a dog. Sems a usual event too, we are always picking up a kitten in Feb.
I will have to post video on YouTube of our cat drinking out of a water bottle.

My cat likes to sleep on the quilt I keep folded at the end of the couch.  It was in the wash the other day, so "her" spot on the couch was bare.  I was on the couch, reading intently when she jumped up into her spot.  Instead of laying down, she sat upright and proceeded to glare at me.  I paused, peered over the edge of my book and looked at her.  Not a clue what was bugging her, so I went back to the book.  As I turned the next page, she actually heaved a sigh.  I looked back up, and she glared at me some more.  The cat telepathy must have finally kicked in, because I got the message.  I got up, got the other quilt from the other side of the room and walked back to the couch.  She graciously stepped aside and waited.  I arranged the quilt in the proper place, and she hopped on it and made herself comfortable.

Well trained, aren't I?

Well, I guess I could post a cute cat story..............my girl cat has taken to this feather (its part of a cat toy) & she will get it in her mouth & carry it around the apartment & the whole time she is doing that, she meows and meows and meows really loud and unlike I have heard her do before.    It is soooo cute!    Also, have any of you cat lovers noticed that your girl cat is more "vocal" than your boy cat?    I guess that is also a sign they are somewhat like humans, huh?    Lord knows, we girls seem to be more vocal!    :bandance;

Our cats are both 4 years old and have become more vocal when they WANT something. The female cat is vocal when she wants treats or food, while the male cat is more vocal when he wants to go outside and layout. He will be vocal when he wants supper though.
