Me with Baron von Fresenius

Which gloves does everyone on PD and home hemo prefer? Me, I prefer the latex (or imitation latex) because they conform better to my hands, and tape doesn't stick to them as much when I'm handling it. I'm getting the vinyl ones now that my centre has switched from Baxter to Fresenius for supplies, but my nurses are trying to get them to switch to latex gloves for me.

I don't wear gloves but instead wash my hands with antibacterial soap, then use alcohol hand cleaner. Then right before I connect the bags I use alcohol hand cleaner again. I am afraid of germs! But... I have not had a dialysis related infection in 11 years (okay... so I've only been back on PD for four years).

I have Alport's Syndrome. My kidneys failed when I was 14 and I was on PD for five years before receiving a kidney transplant from my mother. That kidney failed in 2004 and I've been back on PD ever since. I am undergoing treatment for my high antibodies at Cedars-Sinai medical center. I had a kidney transplant on June 10, 2008. My boyfriend was the donor.

Most people on PD just scrub up but i wear gloves only because i had a nail infection when i first started PD. I have always worn gloves since as i wouldnt chance it now , i was told i would have been in big trouble if that infection had got near my exit site !

Haha, me too. I love Purell. Back before there was Purell I used to smear Betadine all over my hands before unhooking myself. Blech!

For home hemo cannulation for Marvin, I handwash with antibacterial soap the length of time it takes me to sing "Happy Birthday to You" twice.  Then, I lather down in Germ-X (alcohol-based hand sanitizer) on my hands and up above my wrists.  Then, I wear latex gloves.  The last week or so, I've also worn a mask when cannulating Marvin's fistula (I've had a nasty sinus infection and what I thought was a cold, too).  Every time during the treatment that I touch Marvin or his machine, his lines, his chair-side table, I lather down with the Germ-X again.  Marvin hates the smell of it, but I'm trying to be extra careful.

Ahh, I'm not the only one who wears a mask during cannulation. Since I've had to use a catheter through a large part of the time I've been on dialysis (pushing a year and a half), I've gotten used to wearing both gloves and a mask, and I just feel more comfortable when I've got something that keeps my access and blood protected from my mouth germs. My nurses found (and still find) it kind of weird because it's not common to wear a mask during cannulation.

The 1st 2 months on PD I used the latex gloves and masks.  Now I've been on PD for over 6 mos.  I still use the mask and only wash my hands and use Purell right before connecting or going near my exit site.

When I was on PD in 1980-1982, my parents (I was 7) had to scrub with betadine sponges before each exchange. Mom still talks about how dry her hands were during that time! When I was on PD in the last two years, after getting all the supplies together and putting my mask on, I'd scrub really good with anti-bacterial soap, then rub down with alcohol sanitizer, then use the santizer again right before connecting.

I always wash with anitbacterial soap and then put on the latex gloves.  I always find this funny since the box states the gloves are non-sterile.  Every time I read that on the box I wonder why I should wear them.  Are my hands cleaner than the gloves?  Where were they made? (Thailand) Who handled them before I use them?

The other thing on the box that tickles me is that they "contain 50 micrograms or less of total water extractable protein per gram." Do they think we will eat them? ;D

I'm getting the vinyl ones now that my centre has switched from Baxter to Fresenius for supplies

I have been getting these gloves from Fresenius for 6 months.
