So these days I fill a cup with ice and chew on it. Then when I go out I ask for extra ice and figure I am getting less soda. Am I kidding myself?

Good question. I used to do the ice thing. But would do it compulsively. So I don't think it helped me.

Kit, I measured one time. Using a 16 oz cup full to the top with crushed ice (from our icemaker), I let it sit on the counter and melt down completely. I got about a cup of fluid. So yes, it does make a difference.

When water freezes the molecules form lattice-work structures, which take up more space than the same amount of water in liquid form does. Because ice is water takes up more than the normal amount of space that it requires in liquid form, it is less dense and thus lighter per unit of volume, which is why ice floats if you drop it in water. So if you chew the a cup full of ice rather than drinking a cup full of water, you will get less water for consuming the same volume.

Maybe you've heard it and I don't know if it will work for you, but eversince my Mom took some sip of lukewarm water first thig in the morning, her cravings for ice and water was gone.

Very interesting thread. On another news group there was a big article about "eating" ice rather than drinking to cut back on the fluids for dialysis patients. But there was no real science to the article posted. Learned something today. Yeah!!
