(((((NVRWKN)))))  Oh my goodness - what sad news to lose your kidney.  I'm so very sorry.
I have a transplant but do not have any experience with taking one out.
I will keep you in my prayers.
Stay Strong

How are you doing, NVRWKN ?

I gave Marvin one of my kidneys in 2000.  The transplant lasted until 2003 when it contracted the same disease that destroyed his original kidneys (IGA Nephropathy).  He went back on dialysis in October of '03.  He had to have the transplanted kidney removed in December of 2004.

The surgery wasn't bad for him.  They went back in the same incision where they put it originally (lower right abdomen close to where the body connects to the leg).  He was home in three days but sore for a couple of weeks.  Marvin actually felt much better after the nephrectomy  because the transplant (which had stopped working over a year before) was trapping blood.  When the surgeon took it out, he told me it was huge (terribly swollen) and had to be causing Marvin great discomfort.  Marvin recovered quickly and moved on.  He had no problems from the nephrectomy at all.

However, I had an awful time when he had to have the nephrectomy.  Even though it hadn't worked in over a year, I guess I was holding out hope that it would start working again (I know -- this is not logical and makes no sense -- but when you've been on dialysis and then had a transplant and then have to face dialysis again, you hold on to any shred of hope, no matter how impossible or illogical).  When the transplanted kidney was removed, I had to give up hope that this one would ever function again.  Also, because the kidney was originally in my body, it felt like a piece of "me" died.  The transplant experience was such a wonderful one for me (as long as the kidney lasted), but the nephrectomy made me realize that it was truly over.  I had a hard time emotionally dealing with it, but Marvin did great physically.

Let us know how you're doing.
