Daughter has blood in urine today... prayer please...

I am taking my 10 year old daughter to the Dr, she has a very soar throat and 102 temp since yesterday. She has a bit of blood in her urine too. Pray it is nothing serious. Maybe strep throat? The doctors always tend to scare her, talking about her having a chance to inherit this Alports. The thing is, if she does, there is nothing to stop it. They want to do a bunch of tests on her and I say no. I can have her bun and creatine tested every year to keep an eye on her levels, but if she does have it there is nothing they can do except diagnose, bill and scare her more. Her bun and creatine levels were fine last year, within the limits. But she had the same thing, a soar throat and blood in her urine. She had to do a round of antibiotics and was fine. I get fearful too, but know from experience there isn't much to do otherwise. Again, please pray she gets through this fine too. Thanks.

Young children often develop urinary tract infections, typically because their behavior is not as hygienic as adults', so most likely this is the problem, given the compresence of fever with the bloody urine.
There is something to be said for not monitoring your daughter to detect early symptoms of Alport's disease, given the negative psychological impact of knowing what is coming, which is itself harmful to psychological health and the overall sense of well-being.

Wow, thanks guys for the support! They did culture her throat, but since I had mentioned the blood in the urine they wanted a sample. Poor thing could not go! We waited almost an hour before she could give them a sample. There is blood and protein, and given our family history they are sending it all out to be cultured. He thinks it could just could be a strain of step that does go to your bladder. The Dr. was very nice, but my daughter did ask if she was going to have to go on dialysis. She doesn't completely understand it all, that's one reason I wanted to avoid going. At least it was a different Dr than last year, it made it much more tolerable. It does remind me to get a base line reading on her bun and creat. levels so when this type of thing does happen I can see if the levels are elevated or not.
It's not that I don't want to monitor them for Alports, it's just that I think I know more than the GP would about it. There isn't anything one can do to stop it, just keeping diet under control, monitor BP (early sign of Alports is high bp), and bun creatine levels. All three of my kids need that. I just get edgy around doctors anyway, which probably doesn't help.
Thanks again for your responses, it means alot to me!

I know exactly how it feels going to the doctors with your children when you have a renal disease. They jump on it straight away. I took my son (just turned 11) to the GP last week for fungus in ONE nail, as was told to have him ultrasounded for PKD. She was totally thoughtless of him sitting there. She even told him he could have the same disease as me! Thats after she had to ask me if PKD was hereditary. I was soooo angry, I had steam coming out of my ears. Some Dr's are just morons they assume we are all stupid and would ignore symptoms in our kids. Needless to say it wasn't my usual GP (she was booked out) and I will NOT be seeing her again.
So more {{{HUGS}}} to you and your daughter.

OMG Wattle I am so right there with you!! I have had other doctors do the same. That's why I am so gun shy now. They can be such an ass and in a very damaging way. I had gone to a doctor early on at a teaching hospital (bad idea sometimes) and it was right after my dialysis had started ( so I was still very fragile, sick ...). Anyway, he asked if I had kids, I said yes, he asked if I had a boy, ( boys who have alports are the ones who ususally have kidney failure where girls usually are just carriers) I said yes, he comes right back with "well, you know he has this right?" Well, I had to argue with him, it is a 50 % chance you moron that he could inherit my husbands genes, and he argued right back, that he just did a round in genetics yada yada..., I left in tears calling my husband... anyway I ended up reporting him. No good it did I am sure.
Thanks though, I really appreciate your honesty and support. We will find out today if it is bacterial. Will let you all know what happens.

Traci
blood is normal in urine if you have Alports, my husband has it and our girls we were told would be carriers and if there sick it's OK to have blood in the urine. Dr's can be so mean we've delt with a few of them. Hope your daughter is feeling better.
