Pregnant and on dialysis

no i didnt see it but i will check it out...i'm on hemo....in january i will be put in the hospital so the baby can be monitered during dialysis....of course my in center doc doesnt like the idea. i think b/c he will now longer be getting paid...gotta love the docs

How the heck did I miss this thread? Oh boy, I have been in your position before misschell purely due to lack of knowledge or lack of doctors listening. That will never happen again for me. I would never allow that to happen again.  My pregnancy ended in my 5th month due to miscarriage and being unwilling to believe it was anything but early menopause setting in. My health has defiantly changed since that time. As my health is now I couldn't chase after a 3 year old. Had you thought anything about your health issues or the ability to chase after a child down the road? I wish you best of luck and hope all goes well.

i'll be 30 when my little boy gets here.....if i can be pregnant, go to dialysis and be a full time college student i can chase a kid when he's three

Pregnancy is a wonderful thing.... I hope you have the best doctors taking care of you and your little one in waiting. I had both of my children after my first transplant, but I got pregnant 6 months after the transplant instead of 2 yrs after like I was supposed too. (Condems really aren't a sure thing...)

I was never pregnant on dialysis, but if I was, I would try to carry full term as you are. I hope nothing but the best outcome for you. I had to chase my son and daughter around when I went back on dialysis and they were 3 and 2 yrs old... boy, was that ever exhausting. Now I am a single mom (basically was anyways even when their dad lived with us) and even though I have a transplant again, I still get tired out easily, and so on... it's alot of work even for a healthy mom, the good thing is though, you know there is alot of hard work ahead, but your determined to make it work. You are very brave.

Motherhood is a beautiful thing.   

I was lucky enough to have my children before dialysis. Although due to my kidney problems my daughter was born at 32 weeks. It's a hard road at any time. I wish you luck with your pregnancy and I hope it all works out well for you.

The four things to keep in mind when you are pregnant and on dialysis are: 1) the increased risk for abnormalities in the fetus, especially in the nervous system; 2) the increased risk of health problems for the mother because of the stress of pregnancy in the presence of renal failure; 3) the difficulty of the mother having enough energy to take care of the child, if not right now then in the future; 4) the likelihood that the child may become motherless before reaching the age of majority, given the low life expectancy of dialysis patients.  From the tone of the posts, however, I assume that Misschell is determined to go ahead and have the child, so I can only wish her good luck.

I've never been on dialysis, but when I got married in 1998 my neph at that time said it should be fine to get pregnant  I didn't want to get pregnant that early into my marriage, so we waited.  Plus, my husband has three grown children from his first marriage.  So after a couple of years I asked again and my neph said "absolutely not".  Too much risk to myself and the baby.  Why put the address stress on my kidneys.  He said that a pregnancy could throw me into dialysis.

Being that I'm not now, nor have I ever been pregnant or a mother, I agree it looks to be very difficult and very rewarding!!!   Nothing but best wishes to you and the new baby!

why wouldnt i have the energy, its just dialysis....sorry i'm not a single parent

If you are already pregnant then there is nothing I would have you do but dialyze as much as you can and take care of you and your baby.  I would never recommend someone on dialysis get pregnant, but I don't believe abortion is the answer.  Best of luck to you both and keep us posted on your progress

babies are wonderful! i had 4. all high risk pregnancies because of my asthma (the kidney thing didn't start until recently, now it's just grandchildren i chase) even though there is nothing specifically said about it in the movie pregnancy with kidney failure is what steel magnolias is about. the story was written by a brother in memory of his sister. you already know it isn't going to be easy, but it sure will be worth it!!!!! we're all pulling for you. glad to have you aboard.
