Dialysis newbie

Hey my name is karen and I'm 22 years old. I was diagnosed with kidney disease at age 13, and was told I would most likely need a kidney transplant sometime in my 20s. Well as it turned out the doctors were right and I am indeed on the list. I started dialysis in April 2007. My goal was to do PD, but due to the fact that I have Spina Bifida, that was not an option- well it turned out that it wasn't an option AFTER I had surgery!!! Needless to say my doctor at the time completely screwed me over- he claimed that he didn't know I had a shunt and that is something I DON'T believe, but needless to say I had a hard time dealing with him and his 'mistake'. I now do hemodialysis and had my surgery for the AV fistula June 28th and will soon be using it- yay! Some days are easier than others and honestly there have been times where I cannot handle it- but that's normal and I do know I'm lucky in lots of ways and I appreciate things more. More later

Hello and
Karen. Spina Bifida and kidney disease, sounds like you really got a raw deal. My little brother (Well not so little he's 28) also has Spina Bifida so I am familiar with all the things you must deal with on that front as well. You have found the best place in the world for information on dialysis so look around, ask some questions, and keep on keeping on.

Welcome to our community! There is a place here just waiting for you! We are so glad that you joined us. This is the place to be for all facing this renal challenge. As you have probably seen already, there is lots going on here. In fact, we have become a genuine caring and sharing family. This site is the best thing that happened to lots of us when we were diagnosed with kidney failure.
There is lots to read, but don't just read. You need to post, and often, and let us know exactly what is going on with you. When you want to vent and rage, this is the place to do it. Here you will find people who REALLY know what you are going through. This site has been developed to be a home away from home (and in fact, a home in your home!) So take advantage of all this site has to offer, even the games arcade!
