I used to be an avid bicyclist before I started dialysis (I was riding across Indianapolis a week and a half before I started). Although I've ridden short distances occasionally since dialysis started, I've not been able to ride like I want. I'm actually going to try something that might help me ease myself back into it: Riding on my stationary trainer DURING dialysis. I'll start out for maybe five or ten minutes at a time in a low gear, then work myself up to hopefully keep going for the entire treatment. I'm actually able (with EXTREME caution) to carefully stand up and move around while I'm on the machine (my graft is very forgiving with movement and whenever I move I hold the lines to make sure the needles don't come out, and I NEVER try to stand if my bp is running low), so I can get on and off the bike. I've also heard that exercising during dialysis helps remove more toxins. I'm just tired of not being able to ride like I used to, and my expensive aluminum and carbon fibre racing bike has been collecting dust. I'll try it and see how it goes.

I did my first dialysis ride today, and it was really nice. I was only able to do about 15 min, but it's a start. Here's a pic of me on the "dialy-cycle".

Great idea ,  I know that the do have a  pedal machine that you can use if you are in the hospital but they would go crazy if you tried to stand up.  A little more freedom at home but be careful.

I'd be interested to find out the difference in pre and post BUN on the days you bike versus the ones you don't.

Many kudos to you for having he strength and energy to workout DURING Dialysis.  That just amazes me.  I always have this mindset that I don't ever workout enough, so if I miss a day or two I put a huge guilt trip on myself.  My health club is on the way home from Dialysis, so I tried working out after a treatment.

Bad idea.

I did buy a bike in July and I've been biking back and forth from work five days a week.  I love it, especially when I buzz by everyone who's stuck in traffic.  Even if I don't make it to the gym, at least I feel pretty good knowing my car is sitting during the week.

So again, many high fives and kudos to you for multi-tasking your way to a healthier lifestyle.

Wow, Adam you're doing just great!
You are an inspiration to us.
I have a stationery bike, but cannot use it right now because of foot.
I hope I can again some day.

Adam, you opened up this thread mentioning how you "used to be an avid bicyclist before starting dialysis".  It looks to me like you are still that avid bicyclist  who happens to be on dialysis, it's in your heart and IT IS who you are.  Great job man!  You obviously aren't going to stop being who you are any time soon.

None of us should be dialysis patients who used to be something else.  Stay passionate about who you are and what is in your heart.

At my in-center clinic they have these  exercise thingies that clip onto the ends of the chairs (there's a mixture of chairs & beds)
and 2 of the older fellas use it on the session I'm on. And I think it has a medical basis, as you say

Not sure but I think we touched on this board about it.  Cannot remember for sure.

Anyway there are studies that show it helps with toxin removal.
