me and my donor Joyce

« on: August 23, 2007, 11:47:15 AM »

Has anyone else ever had a problem with elevated white blood cells?  My doctor said that my white blood cell count has been high since October.  We have done all kinds of tests.  My nephrologist has now sent me to a blood specialist, and he is testing me for leukemia!!!  WTH!

Try not to look too far ahead--get through each day. Hopefully they will figure out why the white count is elevated and quickly resolve the problem. In the meantime, prayers going your way--hang in there. :cuddle;

You could have a high WBC count just from an infection that's internal.

We have done all kinds of test.... urine, sinus... we even took a test where they took 5 oz of blood, separated the white blood cells, injected them back in, then 2 hours and 24 hours later did scans to see where the wbc were concentrating.... nothing!  No infection!  I don't get it.  I did look at the symptoms of leukemia and I only have a few..... high wbc count, anemia, tiredness, headaches.... all that come with ckd.  Honestly, after I thought about it for a while.... I think it is just precautionary.

Thanks to everyone for your responses and well wishes!!!

Are you on dialysis or have you had a transplant?

I asked this question because I read a blog by another kidney patient who just had a transplant 2 1/2 months ago and her WBC's have recently dropped dramatically. She mentioned something about  leukopenia and CMV and/or EBV activation from her new kidney. Apparently, these are infections that almost every human body carries, but some can react to it. Here's her blog (http://mykidney.com/blog/index.php) if this may apply. There are links from the highlighted words in the blog that will take you to info. The Leukopenia entry is about 1/3 the way down the page.

I'm sorry, I didn't answer this!!  No, I am not yet on dialysis and I have not yet received a transplant.

Thanks for the link... I'm going to go look now.

I went to the doctor today for follow up... now I have to do a bone marrow test on Monday! I don't know what the hell is going on!  Kidney failure I can deal with, but don't start piling more crap on top of it!!!!  Okay friends, I need prayers... prayers for negative results on the bone marrow tests.

Please don't panic.  I went through the bone marrow test for leukemia, only to find I had a bad case of the flu, bronchitis and strep throat all at once - blood tests, especially white count, off the chart.  Five days in the hospital and then home for a week and then back to work good as new.  Bone marrow test is scary but not painful, just lots of pressure as they push to get the sample.  I had a bruise there for a few days but that was all.  Prayers are with you that they are just being cautious.  :grouphug;
