When driving through Northern New Mexico there was a forest we passed through - aspen trees and pines and ponds, it was so beautiful. Must have been a billion trees! It's great when the route is as nice as getting to the destination.

Route 66 is always good.
You haven't seen anything if you haven't been to the Grand Canyon.
The Hoover Dam is cool, too.
If you go to Salt Lake City, you have to get up on Sunday to hear the Tabernacle Choir sing.
I'd also recommend Pioneer Village in Minden, Nebraska.  It's an odd little walk thru history.  Plus, it's Nebraska - what else is there to look at?
Cumberland Caverns in Tennessee is worth the trip.
You can go ghost hunting at Gettysburg.
Washington D.C. could take weeks to cover completely - the Zoo, the Smithsonian, the Capital buildings, Arlington, the Wall, the Lincoln Memorial. . .
New York City, of course.  Are they letting people back in the Statue of Liberty yet?

A few plugs for my home state -
Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum.  If you have the time to stay, they are offering glassblowing classes this year, where you actually get to take home your finished glass project.
Kalamazoo has the USS Silversides - you can take a tour of a Navy submarine.
Grand Rapids has the Fredrick Meijer Gardens.
Mackinaw City, of course - the Island, the Forts, the Bridge, the Sawmill. ..  and the fudge, don't forget the fudge.
Fayetteville in the UP.
Copper Country and Pictured Rocks, Taquahmenon Falls, and the Kitchitikipi Springs.

One of the most beautiful places I've been is Sedona, Arizona.
And the painted desert is beautiful.

We drove the skyline drive in Shenandoah national park in Virginia.  The whole area was beautiful.  We loved it.  Our other favorite destination was Hershey Park.  Great rides.
