To ALL Members,

I am writing this post to ask you to do me a favor, I have noticed many posts that have many spelling mistakes and general mistakes such as typing to fast and having words not typed properly. Here is an example:

"Ih ave bee n on dialysis f or 3 years." (This really bothers me, this is just being careless)

I am asking ALL of our members to please have pride in our site and do 2 things before you hit that "Post" button, 1) Please use the "Spell Check" button for every post and 2) Please go through your post and fix any mistakes. Let's set an example for future members by having pride in our site. I am getting tired of seeing members post so carelessly. If you do not start taking pride in your posts and I see many spacing errors and mis-spelled words I will simply delete that post. I do not want it to come to that so I am asking you to please have pride in YOUR post, it only takes an extra few seconds to spell check and correct any other mistakes.

I hope you understand that we are here to help US and OTHERS and I want people who are looking for help to be able to read your posts and understand them.

I am also asking that you REPLY to this thread to confirm that you have indeed read this and understand the new rules. I will start deleting posts if I need to.

Thank you,

Epoman

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Below are my replies to some members replies. I added this here so in case a new member does not take the time to read the entire thread they will have a better understanding of why I created this post.

UPDATE:
I am not critiquing any posts I am just asking members to have some pride in their posts, is it really too much to ask that before you click the "Post" button, you take 10 extra seconds and hit the "Spell Check" button. If they can't understand that so be it. I care about the QUALITY of posts more so than the QUANTITY of posts. This site serves 2 purposes. The 1st being an "outlet" for members to rant and vent, the 2nd being a resource for people who are about to start dialysis and are scared and have questions. Let me put it this way if a member comes for the first time and they see a lot of posts that have multiple spelling errors and spacing mistakes then they are more inclined to not care about their posts either, however if they see that the posts are clear and concise then they will be more inclined to be clear and concise as well. I do not care about a mis-spelled word here and there, or a spacing problem once in a while. I DO care when I see a post that has multiple misspelled words OR when I can not understand what the poster is trying to say.

UPDATE:
Thank you, and yes of course we all make mistakes and by no means am I perfect. I make mistakes too. I don't care about small mistakes here and there and even grammar mistakes such as using "to" instead of "too" or typing "3" instead of "three" or even "there" instead of "their" I just want new potential members to look at our site and be impressed by our posts and the pride we have in our site.

UPDATE:
Also I am not concerned the WAY someone speaks IT HAS NOTHING to do with that, it has to do with TYPOS and FORMAT. Again I will say it has NOTHING to do with dialect. As for being more liberal to the regular posters well I can't do that since they are the ones setting the example for the site and for any future members. I have NO idea where you got the idea that I was speaking against NON-Americans, This is about taking your time to post and correcting mistakes, I'm not asking to you to be perfect. But EVERY human can type proper or at least try regardless of where they are from. I thank you for making a calm/rational post and I hope this has cleared up what I am looking for and why I had banned "Mel". Finally, I do respect my members and I cherish my "regular" posters and I try to make this a nice community, all I ask from my regular posters is to do one little thing and that's lets make this site great by limiting the number of typos and formating mistakes.

Got it, sir! ;D ;D  I will spell check from now on. I am a terrible typist and often don't catch the dumb mistakes. Updated this post 6/3/06.  I think it is a good idea to check spelling and have pride in our site!

Thank you, I'm glad you understand and I hope you realize why I am enforcing this. You see this site is going to be up and running even after MY death. So every post and thread will be here for many, many years too come. Literally hundreds of thousands of people will visit this site and every post will be here for them to read. Every post made will still be here even after that posters death, so in a way the member is immortalized by this site even after their passing.

OK.

Just a thought, if people think their posts are going to be critiqued you may notice less posting.  I understand the reason WHY you want this done, but I'd hate to see the level of posting decrease.

I have invested literally HUNDREDS of hours into building this site and I have worked hard making it the site that it is. Maintaining a site such as this takes effort and a lot of admin/maintenance work. I don't think asking my members to take an additional 10 seconds to spell check and proof read is to much to ask.

Please do not misconstrue this reply I am not speaking to you directly, I am speaking to everyone on the board.

Maybe if you are going to be the grammar police you should fix this post.

"typing to fast" should be "typing too fast"

Also the number two should be written out "do 2 things" should be "do two things"

Also the first comma after favor should be a period.

The sentence in the parenthesis should have a period at the end.  Putting it in parenthesis doesn't make it special.

Oh and misspelled has no hyphen.

There are other formatting issues but I'm not going to waste my time with them.

Wow! what a great FIRST post, Welcome to the board. It's too bad that the first words out of your mouth is to talk shit to the owner of the site who works his ass off trying to keep this place running. But you can't understand that can you, since you have no problem bad mouthing the admin.
I never said I was perfect and in fact my posts have mistakes too, I'm not looking for perfection just asking my members to try to do their best, as I try to do. Even though my posts are not perfect they are still able to be understood.

But regardless of that fact I just can't believe this is your first post. What a way to make a first impression.

Okay, OK, O-K......

The bottom line is "hit spell check" and correct what you can.  Make an effort.  That is all that is being asked here.   ;)

I am the WORST speller, and thank God for spell check, calculators, and microwaves.  (notice I did not include dialysis machines)  ;D

OK.  I understand this, as I have noticed a post here or there that I really could not make heads or tails out of it.  I don't think it's unreasonable to ask that people make their posts readable, as you said it will make the board more appealing to new members and encourage them to make THEIR posts more readable.  I think as long as everyone had the understanding that we're all human and bound to make a few mistakes, even with spell check, it's not too much to ask.

I appreciate all the hard work you put into this place, Epoman, and the pride you have in it.  :)

I am not at all offended by Epoman's request.  As a high school teacher (English), I myself am sometimes a bit disconcerted by some of the errors I see.  But I have learnt to overlook it.
I personally do not spellcheck (a matter of pride), but I will proof my posts to eliminate typos.

Thanks Epoman.
As an Australian should I spell check to the "American" English.
For example you spell color we spell colour. What do you suggest I don't want to offend you and your site.

My feelings in this matter is that we can't (is this alright or should it be the full word of cannot) all be expected to be O level oxford scholars, I do agree that we should all be clear in our posts, but its hard enough dealing with dialysis let alone having to worry about how you post.I do check my work but I'm (again should this be I am?) just worried you are going to scare away anybody that needs help but has trouble communicating in the written form.

After all this is a great site and if people can't post because there not winners of a spelling bee competition you are not helping all.
There is another option Epoman, for all those people that won't be able to post on this site open a site called I HATE DIALYSIS AND I CANT SPELL.COM

P.S Did a spell check, and it recommends changing Epoman, that would be a bit of a dilemma now wouldn't it.Got a laugh out of that one.

::) Did you even read any of my replies? or ANY replies to this thread. Do me a favor and quit being a smart ass and read the thread to answer your questions.

"My feelings in this matter is that we can't (is this alright or should it be the full word of cannot) all be expected to be O level oxford scholars, I do agree that we should all be clear in our posts, but its hard enough dealing with dialysis let alone having to worry about how you post.I do check my work but I'm (again should this be I am?) just worried you are going to scare away anybody that needs help but has trouble communicating in the written form."

If you had read the thread before making such a smart ass and totally unnecessary reply you would have had your questions answered. Since you want to be a smart ass then I will be one too, if you are worried about scaring away people then design, build, host, and admin your own site with no rules. I can't believe you have the audacity to come at me like this. Tell you what, if you don't like the new rule then save yourself the stressfull agony of taking an extra few seconds to proof your post and just don't post here anymore, it's your choice.

"just worried you are going to scare away anybody that needs help but has trouble communicating in the written form."

You do realize the "written form" is the way we communicate here, and if we can't understand their post then we can't help them.

Epoman,

I wasn't being a smartass, and I'm sorry I came across that way. I had read the previous thread. I  believe there are people out there that spellcheck wouldn't help and you should be leniant towards.
After all we are all going through the struggles of dialysis, it does not discriminate, and I thought this site didn't either.
Some people just don't come across as good as others.
They have come to this site to rant and vent their frustrations too.

In reply,
I would love the time to build my own site , and I'm sure it takes a lot out of you and as i said perviously I think this site is great.
