Memorial Day Weekend

Anyone have plans for the weekend? I'm going to the the cabin and do nothing for 3 days.

My son who is graduating high school went to Costa Rica with his class for 10 days. Jenna and her sister are going with a friend to Palm Springs (gonna be hot!) and my 12 year old son is home, but he's usually busy. So maybe I will get some rest this weekend! Whoo hooo!

My wife is sponsoring a block party, she & her friends have been planning this from before this past Christmas. Its alcohol free & that makes her happy. I wonder who is bringing the "coffee"

I'm at my moms  we are bbqing today.  Getting ready to go shopping with my sisters, then bbq and tonight i'm going to the casino to celebrate a friends bday.  Lots to do today.

Today (Saturday) I worked, may try to get some housework done today and tomorrow.  Monday I work in the morning and then cooking out with the fam in the afternoon.

I'm at my fiancee's house, we just had steak & kabobs (I had kabobs, they had steak!), and strawberries & cool whip. Yum! Brought the puppy out here, that was a disaster!  Oh well. We're all just lounging around right now, so stuffed from eating so much! That and it's not very nice out side!

I made it to the cabin and my laptop is still working, it was a wet ride on the bike. My son just took my wet clothes to the dryer, yeah we really rough it...

Tonight we are having company over for dinner, hubby is working right now and i am supposed to be cleaning, but of course i am here (as always) lol,   tomorrow, honey and i am having a romantic BBQ with just me and him, and  Monday we will hopefully go see Shrek 3

we are bbq-ing tomorrow. hamburgers, hotdogs and tuna macaroni salad, yum. my grandsons are here early and we have been camping in the back yard. i thought this would be a good excuse to get chayton's parents here for once. however my daughter took this and ran a marathon. we now have 15 adults and 9 children coming. it should be fun however. byob

I am being lazy today. We watched the Indy 500 and the Lowe's 600 races today.

I have been sleeping for the past 24 hours -- got up twice to say hello to family - total of awake time, maybe an hour. Sometimes the fatigue wins! Tomorrow my son is having a bbq for the family, so I hope I can stay awake long enough to eat.  Of course, I had to come here in my little awake time!   Hope everyone has a restful holiday.  I agree with Joe Paul  - thanks to all who serve.

Worked inthe yard all day. Had some trees taken out and had the stumps ground up, so ive been cleaning up all day. Not doing treatment today, so looking forward to just hanging out tonite with both arms free!!

We are just hanging around and doing a little work here and there around the house.  Holiday weekends in these parts are not too pleasant on the highways so we usually stay here for the major holidays.  The weather has been perfect so far, a great way to begin another great summer.

The History of Memorial Day


   It was 1866 and the United States was recovering from the long and bloody Civil War between the North and the South. Surviving soldiers came home, some with missing limbs, and all with stories to tell. Henry Welles, a drugstore owner in Waterloo, New York, heard the stories and had an idea. He suggested that all the shops in town close for one day to honor the soldiers who were killed in the Civil War and were buried in the Waterloo cemetery. On the morning of May 5, the townspeople placed flowers, wreaths and crosses on the graves of the Northern soldiers in the cemetery. At about the same time, Retired Major General Jonathan A. Logan planned another ceremony, this time for the soldiers who survived the war. He led the veterans through town to the cemetery to decorate their comrades' graves with flags. It was not a happy celebration, but a memorial. The townspeople called it Decoration Day.

  In Retired Major General Logan's proclamation of Memorial Day, he declared:

  "The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country and during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit."

    The two ceremonies were joined in 1868, and northern states commemorated the day on May 30. The southern states commemorated their war dead on different days. Children read poems and sang civil war songs and veterans came to school wearing their medals and uniforms to tell students about the Civil War. Then the veterans marched through their home towns followed by the townspeople to the cemetery. They decorated graves and took photographs of soldiers next to American flags. Rifles were shot in the air as a salute to the northern soldiers who had given their lives to keep the United States together.
 

  In 1882, the name was changed to Memorial Day and soldiers who had died in previous wars were honored as well. In the northern United States, it was designated a public holiday. In 1971, along with other holidays, President Richard Nixon declared Memorial Day a federal holiday on the last Monday in May.

   Cities all around the United States hold their own ceremonies on the last Monday in May to pay respect to the men and women who have died in wars or in the service of their country.

I had a horrible weekend!  It was supposed to be just the opposite but things don't always work out as we would hope.  I went to the beach (Emerald Isle) with a "friend" of mine for the weekend.  She is an old girlfriend (12 yrs ago) and we have been friends for all this time, however, that has come to an end, a very abrupt end.  Sat, she wanted to sleep in a bit before we got on the road since she worked late Fri night, so I picked us up some sandwiches and met her at her place.  I packed her bags into the truck while she finished primping.  We then went to her mothers house to pick up some furniture she was bring to her brother in exchange for her furniture that he had borrowed and I wound up basically loading a recliner and a couch onto a trailer with the help of hr mom while she ran around the house doing god knows what.  I wasn't excited about it but she is/was my friend so whatever.  Once we got on the road the trip was good. The first day and night there was fun and then it went to hell.

Her brother and his girlfriend had been arguing off and on and I think Jeanelle (my friend) caught the "bug" as she slowly began to turn into a queen bitch.  Tension was building from I don't know where and I could tell she was trying to keep some distance.

It is really a long and boring story. To sum it up, I feel like I was as nice and as good of a friend that a friend for 12 damn years could be.  I did all of the things friends do for one another (with maybe half the effort in return for me) and it blew up for no reason at all.  Apparently because I wanted to be home by 7pm Mon night to watch game one of the Stanley Cup Finals, I ruined "her" trip.  We exchanged a few words and she left me standing in the street as she took off.  I walked back to her brothers house to cool off and borrow a phone since she had all of my belongings.  After 20 min or so she pulled up in his driveway.  We didn't speak one word on the way back (2hrs) and I don't know if I want to speak to her ever again.  It hurts my feelings tremendously that she acted like she did and ruined our friendship.  If I were healthy I might have the emotional capacity to work this out somehow but I just don't think I can deal with such B.S. from anyone and what would I get from it anyway. 

Sorry about the rant, I know it probably makes no sense at all, but I am very disappointed in the entire situation and just needed to get it out there.

Makes all the sense in the world to me my friend, i am sorry you had such a bad weekend and i hope you and Jeanelle patch things up,  the one good thing about this disease that i have learned is life is too damn short to have any enemies  .  Wish i were there to give ya a great big Goofynina hug

George I am sorry for your troubles and completely understand how you feel. I know a cyber friend may not be the same as the kind who are able to be standing next to you when you needed but all I can offer you is an ear. Regardless of that I think very little of someone who can literally just drop someone off and take off. very juvenile, it is something I would expect from a sixteen year old but any way you look at it, a friend even when angry would not do such a thing. We are here for you George. Love ya my friend wish we could shake hands and share a drink with each other right now.
