He said it won't be good since he's a "big guy" and that he would have to be on the overnight machine for 11 hours.  Advice?

Well, I'm on the cycler for 9 hours overnight. There is an option to take yourself off the cycler for a bit between 2 exchanges.
If he's a "big guy" maybe he should lose a little before hand. I can't imagine being heavy  makes it any easier on the body.
I dunno. I'd still think about it.

Don't know how big a "Big Guy" actually is.  I'm 6'1" 230.  I'm on PD overnight for 8 hrs.  With the patient line and drain line, you have a ways to roam around, you are not actually stuck in bed and like it was stated above, during dwell times you can disconnect from the machine.

I think its better to do it over night then have to A) carry around fluid during the day B) To me it beats Hemo b/c you are not restricted to a diet.

My PD nurse told me that patients with a BMI over 35 shouldn't do PD.   Besides not getting adequate dialysis, the fat accumulations in the peritoneal sac prevent the catheter from draining adequately.  Apparently, the issues an obese patient has are similar to the catheter placement problems I've had.   I've had 3 surgeries this year to reposition my catheter because it keeps getting stuck on tissue within the sac.  It's stuck again, but I can drain laying on my side.

Sara - Did the doctor say how much Joe would have to lose before considering it?

LOL, I'm tempted to give it to you Susie.   :rofl;  I agree with you that at least you are home, and you don't have to get stuck with needles every time!  What do you tend to do during that 11 hours?  I thought this could be workable because overnight we could just shut the bedroom door and keep the pets out, but if he'll be walking around during the day hooked up, I'm worried the cats might mess with the tubing.  Are you able to do a shorter overnight if you do an exchange during the day?

Really?  Did he say why?

Unfortunately she didn't, but she's obesessed with trying to get Heph over weight and say's it would be better and PD would work better! I'd ask her, but we won't be seeing her again until september!

You and Joe need to do what you think is best for you guys though and all you can do is give things a try!

Hope you find the answers you are looking for and the people to help you get where you want to be.
