If I rant about someone whining, does that make me a whiner, too?

The woman who sits in the chair next to mine is driving me batty!  I know this is only her second month, and this is all new to her.  I know how hard it all is in the beginning, how bad the crashing feels, how overwhelming it all can be.  I understand that some people have anxiety disorders and other medical problems that make 4 hours in the chair a continuous ordeal.  I'm trying, in my better moments, to be charitable and understanding.

Too bad it's not working.

She's passive, whiny, and hypercritical of everyone around her, especially the nurses.  She takes no responsibility for her own actions, and can't seem to make the slightest connection between her excessive fluid intake and how she feels on the machine when the fluid comes off.  She constantly demands attention at high volume, in the whinest tone of voice I've ever heard.  It grates on my nerves to hear her open her mouth anymore.  "My slipper fell off!  Straighten my blanket!  Turn down the volume on my tv!"  The nurses at my unit are great about helping people, so it's not like she has to yell to get them to do things.  If she whinges once more about how she's not going to keep coming if the nurses don't do whatever "immediately", I'm going to start screaming "Great!  Go and don't come back!"  I'll even chip in to send flowers to the funeral, if only you'll stop whining!  My initial impression when she first started was that she was in the beginning stages of senile dementia, and that was what was causing her to act the way she does.  Then I found out she was only 57, and she apparently whines like that at everyone, including her husband, the poor man.  Misery loves company, and she prefers a crowd.

I know I'm no saint, and I have bad days, too.  I do, however, attempt to keep from inflicting my miserable moods on the rest of the world.  Today though, listening to her whine for attention while the nurse was busy helping me through a crash was like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard.  For gods' sake, woman, you aren't going to starve to death if no one opens your snack container in the next few minutes.  Shut up already!!!

Hope you are doing OK.  Try to think of happy thoughts while you are crashing next time  I am Just kidding. I really do hope you can get rid of that lady.

Now that would drive me crazy! It is rough to sit next to someone who only thinks of themselves. There are a few people like that at my center. We don't have a specific chair to sit in. It's first come first serve. I don't know if this helps but at my center bt the time i get on who ever is next to me is usually asleep. However there is gentleman i seem to sit across from who has down symdrom i love him dearly but he has a fasination with his nose. He really can't help it. i also seem to get next to another gentleman who has a intestinal problem. I try and get along with whom ever i sit next to. I am sorry to hear you have to go through that. Dialysis is bad enough.

Gee and my nurses all went off at me because I was *quiet* and didn't have much to say?! Yeah feeling a bit down with things...

.... but this woman sounds unbelieveable!! I feel really bad if I ask the nurses for something even if it's kind of medical (eg: a profile set or unset or something). I very rarely ask for anything else, or if I do I try to do it an appropriate time such as when everything's done or I see a nurse might have a spare moment or something.

I don't think you can even really put down the effects of Dialysis on someone like that - as you posted she is like that even to her husband (yikes).

Luckily we don't have anyone like that at my unit, unless you count the "crazy" woman who is quite old and has a Psych nurse who attends every session with her and causes a bit of trouble from time to time with yelling and screaming and stuff.. but she's clearly suffering from some kind of disorder..

Perhaps you should try blocking her out with headphones and/or requesting a move. She sounds painful. I bet the nurses have even more colourful descriptions for her.

I am not sure which is worse....a whiny, annoying pain in the a** like that or having to sit near a patient who shits themselves?  I could probably pump up the volume on my ipod and tune out someone like that, but I forgot my clothes pin yesterday and had to rely on the staff to keep a steady flow of air freshener.  At least you can ask/tell them to shut it, what do you say to someone who shits up the unit?

Too bad that person couldn't be in a hospital eviroment, where his needs could be attended too, isn't there some option open to them?  sitting in your own poo for 4 hours has to be really hard on your butt skin....

I'd go nutz if I had to deal with that EVERY treatment. I mean I have my bad days that have occasionally bothered the other patients, and I've been listed as "socially isolated" and "emotionally unstable" (I can't help it, but I'm getting A LOT better) but that is just ridiculous. The only "trouble" we regularly have on my shift is a lady who begs the nurses/techs to do EVERYTHING and she begs for candy every five minutes. It doesn't really bother us though because we know the poor thing doesn't even know what she's saying most of the time. I hope things get better for you  .

I would ask to have them change HER chair instead of yours, but then again, what if the next person is worse.      Thank God you will be doing NxStage soon and you wont have to deal with any of them any more   Keep us posted Jbeany.

Wow, the doc finally gave her some serious happy pills!  She hasn't whined in the last couple of sessions at all.  Saturday, she even made a joke.  Omigod, invasion of the pod people!  Who is this woman?
