First name: Marsha
Nickname (irl) Pete (childhood nickname that has stuck all these years -- all my mom's family calls me this),     or  Petey (Mom calls me this -- always has and probably always will)
Location (be a bit specific): Clarkton, North Carolina (a little, tiny town -- two stoplights -- in southeastern NC); this is where Marvin grew up and has lived for 52 years; we live five miles from the house where he was born and raised.
Age: 45
YOUR RENAL STATUS: wife to Marvin (13-year hemo dialysis patient, currently on home hemo)
What you do for a living: high school English and Journalism teacher (20 years now); before that, newspaper reporter/photographer (5 years)
What you want to do for a living: Before all of Marvin's troubles, I dreamed about being a professional novelist.  Since ESRD hit us, I've seriously considered going back to school one day to be a dialysis nurse.
Relationship status: married to the love of my life and the finest man who has ever lived, Marvin, for 22 years (he's really cute, too!)
Siblings: one sister (2 years older) and one brother (one year older)
Pets: one dog who thinks he's human -- Hop-Sing (a pug/pekingese mix who worships me and is worshipped by me)
Three bands you would consider to be your favorite: I can only list three?  That sucks because I could go on forever.  Here's a start (can't do just bands, though, has to be musicians) ...  Meatloaf, Rod Stewart, Toby Keith, Barry Mannilow, Chicago, Eagles, Temptations, Statler Brothers, Dolly Parton, etc.
Places you have travelled overseas, if any: overseas -- France, Newfoundland;   in US -- all up and down the East Coast (and even in the midwest some) because my dad was in the military until I was 16 (U.S. Coast Guard)
Sport(s) you play, if any: have coached volleyball, softball, and basketball on the high school and middle school levels (don't any more -- those days are over) ; have also coached youth baseball for 22 years (last year, I had a five-, six-, and seven-year-old team -- it was so much fun... I loved working with those "babies," and we went undefeated and advanced to the regional tournament)
Sports team(s) you support: Cincinnati Reds
What you would/did name your first born child:  Marvin and I couldn't have children.  This is the only sad thing that has happened to us in our marriage.  My only "baby" is Hop-Sing (when we found out we were getting him, my mom -- who doesn't really like dogs -- suggested we pick a Chinese name because Pugs and Pekes are both originally from China.  I couldn't think of any Chinese names.  Marvin said he watched "Bonanza" as a little boy and they had a Chinese cook named "Hop-Sing."  So, that's what we named him.  My mom was not impressed.)
Worst injury you've had:   I've been pretty lucky -- no real injuries
Drink/Smoke?: Don't drink, have smoked since I was 15 -- want to quit one day, just not today
What time do you usually go to bed/wake up: Bed 10:00, Wake up 5:00
Favorite colour: pink, pink, pink, pink, pink, or pink; second choice is pink, too!
Favorite food: shrimp
Favorite alcoholic drink:  Don't drink -- haven't since college (but have seriously considered taking it up again)
Why people like you: I'm easy to talk to and like meeting new people; I like people for who they are and don't consider race, socioeconomic status, disability, or religious affliation (or lack thereof); I can find "something good" in everyone I meet; I am sincere and not a fake; I like to help people; I always, always pull for the "underdog."
What people dislike about you: I have been told (by Marvin's home hemodialysis nurse) that I am "intimidating" because I'm intelligent, pro-active, and pushy -- especially where Marvin is concerned; I'm also opinionated, out-spoken, and domineering; I don't usually take "No" for an answer; I can also be stubborn, honest (to a fault), and loud. I've been called "aggressive" and, on more than one hundred occasions, a "b*tch."  If you mess with my family or my dog, I'll fight you in a heartbeat...but, if you mess with my Marvin, you might as well pick out your burial plot.  Your days are numbered, and I will get you.
Best achievement in life: I was a LURD (living, unrelated donor) when I gave Marvin one of my kidneys on July 26, 2000.  The doctors said it wouldn't work because we weren't a good "match," but I kept after them for over five years.  The kidney "worked" but, after three years and three months, it contracted the same disease that destroyed his original kidneys and he had to go back on dialysis.  This was, by far, the most important thing I've ever done in my life.  It was an absolutely wonderful experience for me, and I would do it again -- tomorrow and with my remaining kidney.  I thought that this act was something that would only benefit Marvin, but it did an awful lot for me, too.  Through it, I realized my purpose in life and it enriched my soul tremendously.
Why you belong to this forum: You have "walked a mile in my shoes."  You know where I've been, where I am now, and where I'm going.  You don't judge me, and you let me be me.  You show concern for my Marvin (which makes me love you with every ounce of my being).

Well mine was plain stupid injury.. it was after Hurricane Andrew blew thru town.. 6 months later I can move back into my house at the time.. and silly me.. didnt think.. was wearing those cheapy 3 dollar canvas sneakers mowing foot high grass.. and there was nails and all sorts of broken glass..

My kids were babies..and.. well in went the nail and i thought.. OW!!!.. lifted my foot and saw the nail.. and though.. ooooohhhh crap...so i hobbled to the hose.. soaked my shoe and foot.. went inside.. got some scissors.. cut away and the canvas and pulled the sole of the shoe off (with the nail).. wrapped it up in a towel... went and got a tetanus shot..not much else you can do...

hey.. at least i didnt faint out there on more garbage buried in that grass!!..  :yahoo;

I probably had my nose in a book and you didn't notice me.  Although from the picture on your posts, we might have met in Arkansas where I spent summers as a kid or maybe at a peace rally in '69...

Been to Hot Springs a few times, used to fish at at Table Rock, was in college in '69 but playing football instead of peace rallies. Now I read more and try to forget the old days. I still listen to the same music and wonder how I ever survived. Dialysis is a piece of cake compared to the '60's.
