Hello! Anna my wife is a Home Hemo-dialysis patient since January - 9 months. My job is the setup the NxStage System One machine and do the cannulation with 15 gauge blunts in the button holes. The machine is not complicated but you have to follow the procedures carefully. I can cannulate the arterial button holes easy, but venous give me trouble. It seems like the vessel moves at times. Her skin on her arm is very soft where the fistula is located. We have always been at home doing treatments 4 times per week, 3 hours per at 400 speed. The training nurse had to come out and assist. Friday, she had to use a sharp needle to get connect the venous. getting a little frustrated.

July 2017 from out of state deceased donor, waited three weeks the creatine to fall into expected range, dialysis December 2013 - July 2017.

Welcome to IHD. I only started Hemo a month prior to your Wife. I was on PD for 3 1/2 years until I must have been a little too fast during my set up and gave myself an infection from Hell, causing my switch to Hemo. Since I am still using my cath, my fistula is being particularly slow developing and will need a second surgery to tie off a number of collateral veins, I have no advise on using the needles yet. In a few months I will have my trial by fire/needles, I will learn very quickly how it goes.
In the meantime, I Pray your Wifes veins begin to stabilize and allow you to stick her much easier.

Welcome, my husband is a home hemo patient too and my job is the same as yours
. There are many times I cannot get the venous even though his fistula is straight there (the arterial is on a weird curve). The home hemo nurses give us sharps to use at home. I try one or two blunts then move on to a sharp if they don't work. It's crappy when I miss with a sharp. It's not easy and its been over three years for us.
