Some good news in the dialysis world

The Quanta is getting in unit trials in the UK at Guys and Nottingham hospitals.

It was being displayed at the NKF conference in Reading,  and its main feature is its size.  A LOT smaller than the NXstage.   I was so busy I forgot to ask the reps about the actual portability of the machine. But its progress that there IS another product on the market.

Quanta brags of "flow rates typically used on larger machines", but this is an irrelevancy.  NxStage goes up to 600 (way way beyond "flog the fistula" speed), but does lower clearance than a conventional machine due to the slower dialysate flow.    If Quanta is able to deliver 65%+ clearance in a 4 hour or less treatment, then there may be an advantage over NxStage.

The flow in this case is the dialysate flow: "Continuous 500 ml/min online bicarbonate dialysate flow, with clearance equivalent to traditional systems". This is a big deal. The dialysate production process is the only real difference between any two machines, especially given that the NxStage uses lower flows than any other machine. You can look at the paperwork that comes with your supplies to see that the speed of the dialysate is key to how much clearance the dialysis provides. The Pureflow system uses reverse osmosis to produce 60L of dialysate in ~7 hours. The Quanta can produce half a liter per minute or 30L hours.

I assume this means NxStage will offer a new dialysate process that delivers 700ml a minute very soon, some competition is what HHD delivery needs. Along with some clarity on reimbursement.

Hi JW77 so do I have it wrong if I understand that the Quanta can only be used with a fixed water supply? No bags? What a pity that the Quanta maybe being 10 kilos lighter, but it's still not poss to take it on hols?

I think they may be working on a bag solution.

That said, van conversion is becoming slightly popular in the UK for conventional machines, so an RO, Quanta and you just need to hook up to clean mains and a power:)
