19, Mothers caregiver.

Hi my name is Dominika :), I'm 19 years old and my mother was diagnosed with end stage renal failure this past summer.  :( ???
I live in NYC and as of today she's been on dialysis since Sept. 2013. Its been a hard past few months because everything happened so suddenly.
I'm glad I found this site because i have had SO many questions as to how much our life will change here on out.  ???

Dominika;  This is the place.  Ask any question and you will find answers, maybe, sometimes, answers come every second Thursday at 4pm.
NYC!  I don't know how you do it.  If I see more than three people at once, I get this overwhelming desire to move further back in the forest.  This is an unparalleled website, 'tis good.  Welcome and all that.
Oh, I am so old that I miss my old hand-cranked telephone.  Wife gave me a cell phone.  One of these days I will figure out how to turn it on.  I'm not as old as MooseMom, however.

Once upon a time I got sick.  I got cancer, cancer, cancer, and cancer.  Then I had renal failure, dialysis, chronic bronchitis, pulmonary embolism, gall bladder attack, macular degeneration, and a whole bunch of stuff.  I'll show you my scars if you show me yours.

I am not on dialysis any longer.  I am one of the lucky ones to have survived that ordeal. So I left the forum thinking only those who are on dialysis should speak out.  However, the Head-Mama invited me back. I will discuss anything you wish.  You should expect some corny jokes from me along the way.

How old do you think I am, anyway?   :P

If you can't turn on your cellphone, I hope that at least your wife has taught you how to turn on the vacuum cleaner, the dishwasher, the washing machine and the dryer...you know, those important machines that show how much you love her if you USE THEM.  LOL! 

Domenika, my mother was on dialysis for 5 years, so I can imagine the shock you both might be feeling.  If you have specific questions, don't hesitate to ask.  Welcome to IHD.

Thanks guys ! Its been a heck of a couple months   but my mother is very strong :strong; .. She had 2% kidney function when she finally started dialysis ! I just wonder ... Can you not need dialysis anymore? My mom keeps praying that one day she won't need to do it anymore.  ???

I began dialysis with an 8% kidney function.  This was after a week on dialysis in the hospital.  When it reached 25% they let me go.  At the moment I have a kidney function of about 40%.  The best thing I did while on dialysis was research and manage my own water out-take and insisted on frequent tests.

MooseMom is about a 100 years old and during some bad times, she propped me up - whether she knows it or not. I am eternally grateful.

As for housekeeping; I retired before she retired.  I cleaned the house and did all of the cooking.  I stuffed the clothes in the washer and she took it from there. During that time I added about a 1,000 sq ft to the house, building it myself.   Right now I'm just recovering from painkiller withdrawals (cold turkey).  Having experienced cold turkey I wouldn't advise that for anyone.  No, I didn't clean house during that bout of misery.  With that, I leave the misery of renal failure and the consequences of that, behind.

A pearl of wisdom, hire a housekeeper.  Beats the hell out of cleaning the house.

I am a caregiver to my wonderful husband,  He is 4p and started PD October 2013. We have several living donors waiting to be tested for a transplant. Dialysis is a bridge to get us where we need to go. 
He had a transplant in November 2019.

Everything happened really suddenly for Blokey (my husband, the one with kidney failure) and me too so I know what a terrible shock it can be, especially with all the learning and adjusting which has to be done immediately.
