What's the most lame-brained thing you've done during treatment?

I got all connected and crawled into bed last night, just like usual. When the dog got me up at 1 am to go outside, I realized I never pushed the start button.  I'll have to go do a manual exchange later to make up for it.

When I first started using Nxstage I reversed the lines for rinseback and when I pushed the button to start rinseback the blood started to go INTO THE SALINE BAG instead of the saline pushing the blood back into my wife. We got a bag full of blood before I realized the issue and turned it off. VERY SMOOTH MOVE!!!   Who says you have to be smart to be a doctor.  My wife still reminds me of that when I get too full of myself.

There was an interesting paper about someone who did this with a BabyK (in think it was in Australia).  He was found dead on his machine with the saline bad heavily inflated with blood, since he connected red to blue instead of red to read at disconnect time.

Thanks for sharing that lovely story. Now I can be charged with attempted murder with a dialyisis machine.  When I go to trial I plan on a defense of COLORBLINDNESS. I cant tell red from blue.         Actually its terminal stupidity , I was born this way.

I have done plenty.  Reversed the lines, failed to disconnect the drain line (and had a shower), pulled my needles while half asleep without doing rinseback, and then yesterday completely forgetting to give myself heparin and not noticing until the end of treatment.

I was in the middle of treatment on NxStage, shifted in my chair to scratch my behind  and managed to dislodge my arterial needle.   DH sprang across the room and slapped a 4x4 on my arm while I hit the stop button.  Not too much blood loss but boy was that stupid.

I forgot to uncoil my drain line and left it on the floor.  I discovered the error in the morning  I had the carpet shampooed that day.

Oh, my! Where do I begin?!
Forgot to turn on the pureflow!
Forgot to turn on the warmer (when using bags)
Forgot to put to drain line in the tub. (Fortunately, I have linoleum!)
Accidently pulled out a needle and got blood all over the wall, the curtains, the chair, me!
Left lines clamped.
After doing these things (more than once!     ), I look for those things first if I get an alarm!

I'm with you Deanne, one night I got all set up, did my manual. 3 hours later I hooked up to the cycler and promptly forgot to push the start button. Only I didn't catch it until the next morning. Had to do manuals that day.

I cut my cath with scissors to get the dressing off, and I had to clamp it, and rush to my kidney center.   Thank God it didn't get infected.  I love the kidney team at Loma Linda Hospital.

My stretched and thin PD catheter decided to part company with the titanium connector while I was in Macdonalds.  noticing the leak, I thought the cap had cone off.  went to the restroom, and found that fluid was squirting out from around connector.  mesmerized and unsure what yo do, I just stood there at which point the transfer set and connector parted company completely with the catheter.  This actually turned out to be a good thing because I could then use he transfer set to tie around the catheter itself and stem the flow until I could get home and call my nurse to action replacement connector and transfer set plus a course of antibiotics.  not really a lame act but I think still rates up there on the list of comedy mishaps!

Left the dialysate flow on 300 instead of upping it to 800 during BabyK setup.  Discovered this a couple of hours into treatment, but had to call the RN since this was "lab day" and the post BUN would not be representative of a properly run treatment.

And then there was the time I forgot to clamp off the drain bag when I pulled the clamps on my supply bag. Fastest 'fill' I ever had, only took 5 minutes to dump the entire supply bag into the drain bag.

when i was doing pd, id often forget to warm my bags. talk about cold!
and once i forgot to let the air out first, OUCH!

There are really.2 real dumb things I can say I've done on my nxstage.
1. Forgot to use a tourniquet while cannulating.
2. Didn't increase the dialysate rate when i increased the blood flow rate. Had a flow faction of 18 for 15 mins

I once left the tourniquet on FOR THE WHOLE TREATMENT. Not a good move but in the end there was no damage.
I dont use a tourniquet at all anymore and have no issues cannulating sharps . We have done without tourniquets for almost a year.

So her husband would find her. At least she did it outside so the house wasn't a complete mess. She was quite a piece of work.

Today I was setting up my Baxter machine for P dialysis, but forgot to close the clamps before the first test.  I didn't know whether to start over or go ahead.  I went ahead because I'd done this before and got away with it.  I sure hope it doesn't backfire on me.  I'm very careful most of the time, but it gets so routine I go too fast sometimes.

Several years ago I was with my brother when he shot himself.  In the time leading up to his action I swear that was not my brother inside his body.  There was nothing I could have said or done to stop him.  I saw him ask God for forgiveness for what he had done and for what he was about to do.  And I believe God forgives, all we have to do is ask!

Sad that whatever event cause his troubles was something that he couldn't share with you as I'm sure you would have found a means to show him it was still a forgivable sin.

Some religions, most ALL religions, have re-written the Bible to suit their own ends.  Often listing some sins as 'unforgivable'.  This can cause deep disturbance in some people.

Jesus died for ALL of our sins.  There is no 'list' of excluded sins.  ALL mankind have the choice of redemption.  No Church should let anyone feel as if they are not salvageable thru repentance and prayer.

I'm sure the loss of your Brother, and being witness has left a groundshaking impression on you.

Find some small comfort in knowing that he is now at rest, and with his Lord, finding out the truth firsthand, it is not all what the Churches have written.

I am (and was) grounded in a Bible based church and I know and believe he was forgiven.  It is his family that has to learn to forgive him.  Just for their own peace of mind.
