well, I've been having problems with my exit site being infected. strangely enough, they say it looks good, and does not have drainage, but still, it is very sore.  past cultures have been positive for yeast.  my nurse has told me that if it continues to be infected then they will have to possibly move the exit site to another location.  does anyone know about this procedure?

I can't provide much info since I have never had any issues with my exit site. However, I don't think they will just move your current catheter. I think they would have to remove the old one entirely, let you heal up a bit and then have surgery to put a new one in. I believe the reason is they want to remove the catheter entirely due to risk of infection (especially since you are talking about having your exit site infected).

Anyone else can shed some light on this? I am curious as well.

I had a problem with my exit sight. My. Nurse told me it looked fine too until after about a month the catheter got infected inside the tube. They removed the first catheter, only after several rounds of IV antibiotics. They waited one month after they took it out and I went in to have another one placed. The second one they did is a presternal catheter. I am really happy with this cath. I have had no problems with it at all, (knock on wood).

I spoke to the surgeon today. she is going to close up the current exit site and create a new one a few inches higher.  she said the whole thing will take about 10 min since she's not moving the catheter. The surgery is monday. i can't wait because my exit site is very sore!!

justme15 , I am surprised that your Doctor is just moving it up abit and that it will only take 10 min. I would have thought they would replace the whole lot. Hope every thing goes ok for you.

well i had the surgery last monday. all in all it went well. they moved the exit site a few inches to the right (from my view looking down on it). so it is more on the side of abdomen than in the front where it used to be.  for some reason this surgery hurt more afterwards than the surgery to place the catheter and the surgery to move the catheter. but a week out, the pain is gone and everything looks good. so hopefully this site remains infection free!

I'm glad the surgery went well, and that you're now pain free.  Fingers crossed that the infection will stay gone!

Looking forward to hearing how it went with moving, rather than removing the catheter.  Please post results, and good luck with the procedure.

well, i had exit site pain like before at my old exit site. i got the new site cultured and it came back negative. presently the site looks ok and has no drainage. so, I guess moving the site was successful!

Good to hear!  I just had my catheter placed on January 3rd and already have an exit site infection.  I'm on antibiotics and hope that takes care of it, but wondered what they would do if it doesn't.

Maybe they will go the same route, by just moving the exit site. Otherwise they may have to remove the entire catheter and replace it when things heal.
