Deniferer is a trooper but...surgery and hemo can do a number on even the strongest person. My sister is not one to settle down and sleep during the day but after she had to have her PD catheter removed due to a nasty infection her machine couldn't filter, the doctors suggested she remove her tube and start hemo dialysis immediately. She thought she would be happy to no longer need her machine and be tied down for 11 hours a night and finally have some freedom but she was dead wrong. Hemo wipes her out completely! She has to take an hour after the session and take an hour to "sober up" she calls it. This allows her enough energy to drive home and then she falls asleep again.
This is where I come in. Jennifer is so selfless that I see her trying to do the chores around the ranch and I have to tell her "I got this" so she can rest and heal from her surgery. Of course, no 21 year old on Christmas break wants to be told that they have to head to the ranch for the week to clean, cook, take care of the animals and house on their vacation but Jenn has done sooo much for me in the past that I can at LEAST do this for her! I am kinda like a caretaker for her right now. I bring her juice and food when she finally gets her appetite back. I also monitor her Vicodin intake. Luckily, she has no been needing it lately!
Slowly but surely I am seeing her get better and knowing I am helping in the process does the body good. Haha

Hemo is hard on you at first but she will be okay after a while. I go straight to work after dialysis. The first 3 weeks were the hardest. Hang in there with her, you both will do fine.

Awww, I don't have a sister. I feel sad now for missing out on that sisterly bond ...
*grin*
You both do an amazing job of looking out for each other; you're both lovely and brave.
(I hope you haven't stolen the One Direction pens I sent over; that would make you a naughty sister!)
*huggles* for both of you.

And a big thanks
It taks a lot to be a caregiver, and espacially one young like you and on vacation to boot!! So glad she has you and give her our best. Hemo will settle and should make her feel better shortly. So sad so young that she has to deal with this. all the best to you both!

I am sooooo glad you posted because it always makes us feel good to "meet" the people who are caring for our IHD family members. We all love your sister and are very grateful that she has someone like you to look after her. It is frustrating for us when we know that we cannot do more than offer words of comfort or advice through a computer screen.
(Funny that you should be posting today because this morning I put a Christmas card in the mail to her. I know...it will be late, but so will all of my other cards if that makes her feel any better. Sorry! LOL! It's been a wonky few weeks. Anyway, tell her to be looking out for the mail!)

It does get better, but I too found the start was really hard. I walked into Hospital on advice with 6% function (was at work the previous day), so undoing 9 months of toxic plasma knocked me completely down for the 1st two weeks.
Everyone is different, but I found that once established the effects slowly reduce. I also go to work straight after 8 or 9 hours overnight dialysis.
My trick is to focus on reducing fluid-in so i can keep fluid-out to < 2.3 litres, and a pump speed of <240. Going over either of those starts to impact my day once off dialysis.
