You Dialyse to Live....You Don't live to Dialyse!

Yes! my name really is Bill Ogg and I guess this is my first Blog. Well here goes, and I hope I don't bore you too much!

First of all, I'm a 49 year old male living in the North East of Scotland. I started Dialysis 12 years ago, but I'll go back to the start.
On August 1997 I was a qualified Duke of Edinburgh Award outdoor Instructor/Examiner, A BASI Ski Instructor, A Kayak Instructor and a Grampian Region Outdoor Instructor/Youth Leader. I guess you could say "A Bit of an Action Man".
It was on a Sunday of that month that I went climbing Ben Macdhui (Britain's 2nd highest mountain) I was a Munro Basher in my spare time. When I got home I went for a couple of pints at my local. On the Monday morning I woke up with an almighty hangover and was unable to got to work, in fact it got so bad I had to call out my doctor. 2 hours later I found myself in the Dialysis unit of Aberdeen Royal infirmary. (What The Hell is Dialysis, I Thought) by Thursday I was receiving my first session of dialysis through a neck line.
My first 2 years of treatment was in unit hemodialysis, then on Xmas eve 1997 I received a transplant (Life was wonderful! hot quite as active as before, but never-less pretty good) On a holiday to Teneriffe I went on a hike and got totally dehydrated, the next morning my ankles were like balloons and that was the beginning of the end, my kidney had lasted 3 years.
I went back onto He-mo for six months, then I started (APD) Night-time Peritoneal Dialysis, and that's where I am now.

Oh, did I mention 2 bouts of peritonitis, 2 heart attacks, pneumonia and one of my toes has gone black with Renaud's Syndrome.

One of my best friends said "You are the most unlucky person I know" I said NO, I am the Luckiest man you have met! All this Bull S**T and I'm still alive " Now That's Lucky"

I'll end now before I get to morbid and bitter. Life's been pretty good regardless, with a wonderful and supportive partner, she makes it all worth it.

Welcome Bill,

What a positive attitude and outlook on life you have. Sorry the kidney only lasted 3 years but that is 3 more years you wouldn't have had to be as active as you were.

Hi Bill, and welcome to IHD.  We have "Girl-x-treme" you should be "Boy-X-Treme"!!  Sounds like you are very powerful and athletic.  Keep up the good work.  I'm part Scottish (probably my kidneys) HA!  I am from the McMillan Clan.

I sure am looking forward to your posts.  You could start by going to the Transplant Stories and tell us yours.  I'd like to hear why dehydration is bad on transplanted kidneys. 

I hope you find this site interesting and entertaining.

Welcome to our community, Bill.  Seems we are soon going to have a section particularly for the 'Bills'.  Our admin/owner's name is Bill, then we have Bill Peckham, and the first Bill's brother-in-law who just joined us is also a Bill.
At least I have to say, finally there are finally bills that don't hurt my pocket!  Just kidding!
I am glad you decided to join us.  You will find much here - if nothing else, a place to vent and rage when you have to.  This is a very caring community that has developed into a real family.  Looking forward to hearing much from you.

hi Bill. You need the NxStage. I am so excited about ester, I take the kids campoing in search of the easter bunny, it's a wonderful story but this year I started dialysis so I am not sure how possible our trip will be. I can defilnatly go but I will have to find a place to plug in and drain. By next year if I don't have a transplant I will have a generator and then ALL trips are on. I stay very active with three smaller kids in the house and my hubby the biggest kid of em all. Look for Easter pics this year, I promised my nurse and my doc!

Your story is much like mine compared to others but I don't quite understand what caused your renal failure? It sounds extremely sudden and terrifying, glad to see your so optimistic, more people should be so. R U a myspacer? I'd love to see some pics of your forests and trails. Eye candy is an emotional uplift to me and eye candy is the earth in its natural state. Love to see your little space of the world, I am in Kentucky USA and my fav nat'l forest is the Daniel Boone.
