I played in the North Carolina state finals in table tennis for the USA National Senior Games (
http://www.nsga.com/2013-national-games) this past weekend. I won a Silver Medal in Men's 55-59 Singles and Silver in Men's 55-59 Doubles. By winning a medal I qualify for the national finals to be held in July 2013 in Cleveland, Ohio USA.
This was the first time since I've been on dialysis that I have gone away from home with my cycler. I had to watch my schedule closely to make sure I got my necessary dialysis hours and still be able to meet the playing schedule. Fortunately I've been feeling pretty well lately and was able to perform at my best. By the end I was pretty exhausted (after a long drive home as well) and I slept for more than 13 hours! The only adjustment I made was to reduce my day fill down from its usual 1000ml to 500ml just to reduce my weight a bit during the competition.
Only my doubles partner was aware that I'm on dialysis. Not that I keep that a secret, but it just never came up. And besides, it's hard to feel sorry for yourself at an event that includes 80 and 90 year olds who are still competing at a high level!
