Wasn't it wonderful to watch a show that WASN'T "CSI: Downton Abbey"?

I have a few thoughts about this show that I enjoyed so much, but first I'd like to hear from anyone else who watched and has some opinions to share.

I've only seen one episode, and that was purely under duress.  I think I'm the only English female who hasn't watched either series in its entirety.

I loved both seasons. I thought the Dowager had the best lines in the last episode. She gave some real zingers. I've warmed to her much more over the two seasons.

I just love to hate O'Brian and Thomas.

Season 2 was so good, I don't see how they can live up to it with season 3!

Has season 2 finished?  I thought that it was on again intwo weeks.  I think that a Christmas special was made.

Here in the States, we have really dull television during the Christmas period.  Everything from mid-December to mid-January is repeats, all of the talk show hosts are on vacation, and there's nothing to watch.  In the UK, though, their Christmas telly is the highlight of the viewing year.  Many popular series will do a Christmas special; it's such fun!

The last episode that we saw of Downton Abbey here in the States was shown in Britain as the Christmas special.  They are beginning production of season 3 next month, but I'm not sure when it is scheduled to be shown.

I loved it, it made my Sunday nights. I watched Upstairs and Down stairs last week, really looked forward to it, it was crap, turned it off half way through. What will I do now?

Ah, does this explain why so many American programmes take a mid-season break, or is that a completely different kettle of fish?  Two of my current favourite American comedies are back this week after two whole months without them ... yay!

Poppy, yes, you may take that as a compliment, and yes, that is why your fave US shows have a midseason break.  I'm curious...which are your two favourite American comedies?

Back to DA:

The burned Canadian soldier that returned to Downton Abbey a la "Return of Martin Guerre"...what was that all about?  And Robert playing kissey face with that maid?  That seemed totally out of character.  Season 2 seemed really rushed.  I don't really see much chemistry between Sybil and her Irish chauffer; again, that all seemed rushed.  Anyone have any comments/critiques?

Currently, The Middle and Modern Family.  I also really love The Big Bang Theory and I think that's due back very soon too.  Huzzah!

You're not doing a very good job of making me sad that I missed watching Downton Abbey.

My mum had all the Upstairs Downstairs books when I was little and I remember reading them and they had a few (perhaps very tame, but not for an eight year old) rude bits in them ... *gasp* ...

Poppy, The Middle and Modern Family are my two comedy must sees.  I've just recently started watching Big Bang Theory on OnDemand, and it's growing on me.  All three of these series have started showing new episodes, so you should be getting them soon.

I saw a new version of Upstairs Downstairs recently, and I read that new ones are being produced to be direct competition to Downton Abbey.  I also read that Jean Marsh had a stroke, so she won't be participating quite as much.  Is all of this true?

MM, I agree that season two seemed rushed....

Re: the Robert and Jane kissey thing...
My take was that it was a commentary on Lady Grantham's being too busy with all the post war stuff. There was the scene where she brushed Robert off because of the work she was doing.... I agree, though, his character had been developed to me more stalwart. That seemed "off" to me and if it WAS to make a point about HER activity, I think it could have been handled better.

But one of the things I took away from that "rushed" feeling about season two was that an underlying theme was the rapid change that society underwent after the war.

One of the things that I think has not been well-developed (or is just contradictory) is the change that O'Brian seems to be undergoing. One minute she is trying to confess her sins and the next she is giving advice to Thomas on how to manipulate Robert.

Ah, well...I still found watching it the highlight of the week.

Yes, O'Brian is an interesting character.  She is definitely manipulative, mostly for her own amusement, but she carried it way too far when she left the bar of soap on the floor.  She knew it, and she tried to fix it in time, but she didn't, and she is paying for it emotionally.  I believe she really cares about Cora, and she is mortified by what she did.  You would have thought she'd learned her lesson, but she just can't seem to stop herself.  I am curious to see where this character is going.

I think Robert felt irrelevant; everyone else in the house seemed to have a new role when the house was made into a recuperation facility, but Robert didn't quite know what to do with himself.  That coupled with Cora's increased wartime activities perhaps made him go a bit loopy, but since it was too rushed, it ended up not making a lot of sense.

I thought that the burned Canadian soldier, aka the heir that was supposed to have gone down with the Titanic was a bit of a strange story that went nowhere.  I wish that they had developed this further.  It would be nice to see Sybil find someone.

I think the burned soldier was a fortune hunter....not the real deal, but the friend who learned enough about the person he was "impersonating" to think that he could get away with it (having been burned and therefore unrecognizable). His last exchange with Edith seemed to indicate that he knew the gig was up because of the scrutiny from the rest of the family.

I was somewhat disappointed that they had to kill off the sweet (but weak) Lavinia. I never could quite figure out why Matthew "fell" for her in the first place. THAT seemed out of character. On the other hand, bringing in the Spanish flu was historically accurate as it was a terrible killer after the war.

I think this is true, but it was complicated by the fact that Lavinia really fell in love with him, that Matthew DID have a great fondness for her AND he, for good reason, felt that he couldn't leave her after she had offered to spend her life with him despite the belief that he was crippled and unable to father a child.  I was pleased to see that he was unwilling to cast her aside despite his love for Mary.

Lavinia had to die, therefore, if Matthew and Mary were ever going to have the chance to be together, and THAT was supposed to be the big payoff.

Yes, the burned soldier was a fortune hunter, and that could have been an interesting story if it had been told in more than one episode.

I was hoping they'd be working in the Spanish flu because that was truly an historic event, not to be ignored.

MooseMom, I have a request: can you change the subject line to include the word SPOILERS?

I have Downton Abbey in my Netflix queue and I don't want to spoil it for myself by accidentally reading something I wish I hadn't! I stopped reading the thread when I saw where it was headed but others might not be so fortunate.

I guess in the future I just shouldn't read threads about shows I haven't seen yet!

I agree.  I know I'm coming in late, but I love the show, and really liked the Christmas Special (of course I was meant to, with that ending and all)....

My husband goes to a friend's house every week to watch Walking Dead (now they'll watch zombie movies since that season ended).  The first week after the Christmas episode I cheerfully kissed him goodbye and shoved him out the door, prepared for an uninterrupted evening in Downton, but the Old Curiosity Shop was on!  Disappointment!

I wonder if they'll be brave enough to drop the Bates character?  I like him so much, but all the ones I like have made it (other than William, who had "red Shirt" written all over him).
