After 6 mos. on D,  I finally found other patients to share our ups and downs. I am a 53 year old Navy veteran. I have a wonderful supportive wife and two adult children 3 hrs. Away.  I was diagnosed with nephritis at age 20. I started D last July.  In center hemo.  T TH Sat . Washed out after treatment then intervals of 2 hrs sleep off and on. Feel like a real person in the AM. I look forward to share my experiences and learn from yours ;).

How is your wife coping?

Have you thought about home hemo?  You get more treatment and feel better than having less dialysis in a clinic.  It's kind of crappy that to get the best dialysis, you have to do it yourself at home, but that's the way our system is, unfortunately.  Still, it's something to consider.

Welcome, Fingerlakes!  What a beautiful part of the state you live in!  And lucky to have your children nearby!  I'm a NYC girl myself.  I've been doing in-center hemodialysis for seven years and I can tell you that the pattern you describe--come off the machine feeling washed out, sleep a couple of hours, feel more like yourself the next day--that's a pretty common way to feel.  One thing to try is to ask your nephrologist to increase your dry weight just a little bit, so you feel less drained.  Worth trying...Hope to be hearing a lot more from you on this forum.  All the best to you.

Fingerlakes, welcome to IHD.  I'm so glad you found us.  I do in center nocturnal dialysis.  That is where you go in at night and come off in the morning for a nice long dialysis of 8 hours.  But, I can sleep through most of it and I feel much better.  I get home at 3:30 in the morning so sleep another 4 hours but get up feeling fine.  This is 3x a week. The theory behind Nocturnal Dialysis is a gentler cleaning because they turn the blood pump speed down to 300 and you get more phosphorus off, plus all that extra time gets you clean and the water or fluid has more time to transfer to the blood stream for removal.

Welcome I am new as well my husband is on the same schedule Tu, Th, and Sat.  he is always wiped out afterwards.  I feel so bad for him he can go in to D looking one way and come out looking so very different.  I am new as well I hope to make some friends and my husband hopes to find some support.  (he's in the chair as we speak :(
