SHERMAN OAKS, Cal. - While most of Hollywood glammed it up and walked the red carpet at the Golden Globe awards Sunday night, comedic actor Jack Black, as usual, went his own way.

Black accepted an invitation to a high school prom in Sherman Oaks, California, for 300 kids and young adults who have survived kidney disease.

Some have undergone transplants, others have had kidney transplants and others were just diagnosed.

The 13th annual Renal Teen Prom was sponsored by the non-profit Renal Support Network.

"It's a prom for kids that have kidney disease, that have had a transplant and didn't get to have a prom of their own, cause they were having medical problems," Black said. "And it's a great night where kids get to meet other kids that have had the same situation, make friends and share their stories... and have a really good time. Lot of good times... dancin'... singin'... partyin'... you know prom."

The kids sure appreciated Black showing up so much... that they elected him Prom King.

What's past is prologue

I had no idea that he skipped the Golden Globes for the prom - I was utterly floored to read this. How sweet. Jack Black was the first celeb that my older son could recognize and thus was the actor who taught Aidan that this was all just a show. The boys ADORE the panda!

I was laughing uproariously at his performance at the prom. Then g and I watched him sign autographs and take pics with the kids for a bit, but I had to leave for the parents lounge because I was getting emotional watching him trying to make all of these kids feel special and important. When he grabbed two young men around the shoulder, looked straight into the camera and said 'my boys!' that was pretty much all I could take and still keep my composure. At the parents lounge I had some marvelous chats with a few transplant old- timers.

Anyhow, thanks so much for the invite, Karol. We had a fabulous time!

This is his 3rd prom. He said he will always come - as long as he's in town.
This photo is from the Jan. 30 issue of Star Magazine - Jack Black and Heather, a dialysis patient, at Lori Hartwell's Renal Support Network Kidney Teen Prom last Sunday.
