I heard on the news about the girl in California I think who entered
a radio station contest on drinking the most water and she died.
I've heard of that being a dangerous thing to do even for a person
without kidney problems.  It is hard to believe they would have such
a contest and the station would allow it.  Maybe she did have kidney
problems and didn't know it.  How sad.  A mother of young childlren.

They are contemplating serious criminal charges to three of the radio station employees for letting and encouraging this to take place. Sad 3 children lost there Mom.

They held a contest for this?  How dumb can you get?

I've heard of runners dying from this - they overhydrate for a marathon - but a contest?  Yeeeesh.

A civil lawsuit is expected to be filed Monday on behalf of the family of Jennifer Strange, the Rancho Cordova woman who died after competing in a radio station water-drinking contest, a Strange family attorney said Friday.

Attorney Roger Dreyer confirmed to News10 Friday that he intends to file paperwork Monday to begin civil proceedings against radio station KDND 107.9 The End in connection with Strange's death. Dreyer would not offer specific details of the suit.

Strange, 28, was found dead in her Rancho Cordova home January 12. Several hours earlier, Strange participated in a water drinking contest on The End's morning radio show "The Morning Rave," challenging contestants to drank large amounts of water to win a Nintendo Wii video game system.

Dreyer spoke with reporters late Friday after a television appearance with Strange's mother Nina Hulst on CNN's "Larry King Live." Dreyer said the family was interested in speaking out about Jennifer's tragic death in hopes of keeping other families from similar pain.

"The family has an understanding of the value of sharing this experience because they have a really strong belief that they just don't want this to happen to another family," Dreyer said.

Dreyer said the family was holding a memorial service for Strange Friday evening with funeral services tentatively planned for Saturday. The services were planned only for family and friends and were expected to be closed to the public, Dreyer said.

I agree it was a stupid thing to do and she should have known her limitation. That's like the polar plunge, if a guy dropped over from a heart attack are they going to prosecute the organizer of the event? I think not.

The problem occurred in that she drank the fluid too fast and it diluted her sodium level.  If sodium falls below 135 problem start occurring and if it goes below 100 it is usually deadly within hours.

It was for a Wii, not a PS3. That changes things a little. You can't hardly find Wiis in the US bc EVERYONE wants one. Nobody wants a PS3. Now I can see why the woman did it in the first place. It was a rare chance for her to get her kids a game system that can hardly be found in the US. That makes it even sadder though too... :'(
