Hello to alL!  I'm Chris, live in South Jersey, (female) 57 years old and new to dialysis by 2 months.  It's driving me crazy,sitting there for 4 hours............ running out of ways to pass the time besides the stupid TV.  I've been diabetic since the age of 14, so my kidneys took a lifelong beating, sad to say.  Any diabetics out there?  Anyone from New Jersey?  I was born in South Philly, moved here when I was 30.  Would love to hear from y'all !!  Have a great day.

I was diagnosed at 13.  Sucks to be told you can't eat all the junk your friends are getting, doesn't it?  I've got a transplant now, and when they first set me free to eat sugar, I couldn't stop!

Hi Cricket,
I was dianosed at 7 with Type 1, but now on a different treatment plan with a kidney and pancreas transplant though.

Diabetes -  age 7

Neuropathy in legs age 10

Eye impairments and blindness in one eye began in 95, major one during visit to the Indy 500 race of that year
   -glaucoma and surgery for that
     -cataract surgery twice on same eye (2000 - 2002). another one growing in good eye
     - vitrectomy in good eye post tx November 2003, totally blind for 4 months due to complications with meds and infection

Diagnosed with ESRD June 29, 1999
1st Dialysis - July 4, 1999
Last Dialysis - December 2, 2000

Kidney and Pancreas Transplant - December 3, 2000

Cataract Surgery on good eye - June 24, 2009
Knee Surgery 2010
2011/2012 in process of getting a guide dog
Guide Dog Training begins July 2, 2012 in NY
Guide Dog by end of July 2012
Next eye surgery late 2012 or 2013 if I feel like it
Home with Guide dog - July 27, 2012
Knee Surgery #2 - Oct 15, 2012
Eye Surgery - Nov 2012
Lifes Adventures -  Priceless

Hi Cricket, and welcome to IHD.  I'm so glad you found us.  I've always lived in the Pacific Northwest so "back East" as we call it, has always interested me.  I'm not diabetic, my kidneys failed when I was 24 for some unknown reason.  I just turned 50.  I did have one transplant that lasted 17 years so I have no complaints.  Just kidding I have lots of complaints.   :waving;

9.22.10: Catheter surgery
9.23.10: Started in center Hemo
10.06.10: Fistula surgery
12.02.10: Started using right upper arm Fistula (15 gauge)
12.30.10: Catheter Removed
07.01.11: Laparoscopic CAPD Catheter insertion
07.29.11: Started CAPD, 2000ml, 4 exchanges (Baxter)
08.15.11: Started filling with 1500ml (instead of 2000ml), 4 exchanges
08.21.11: Back to 2000ml fills, 4 exchanges (3-2.5% & 1-1.5%)
10.12.11: 2000ml fills, 4 exchanges (3 1.5% & 1-2.5% overnight)
11.08.11: Transplant list

Dialysis works for me, I don't work for dialysis!

Welcome to our community, Chris!  One of the beauties of this site is that when you say something, people totally understand what you are talking about.  For instance - those 4/5/3 hours you spend on dialysis.  You must do a search, because we have a thread concerning just that.  I take my laptop, sometimes I read, once I even crocheted a toilet tissue cover!  And I chat or talk on the phone (if I am in a place in the unit with good reception).  I am glad you found us.  Here you will find lots of information, support and encouragement.  Just think of us as your new family  :grouphug;

Good morning to alL!  It's Saturday here in South Jersey (Blackwood Clementon exit !) and my mood is slowly deteriorating.......... dialysis today at 2:30, my usual chair time.  I've noticed that on my "D" Days, I watch te clock and I slowly recoil into a dark mood.  When I sit in my chair, I look around.  Everyone is sleeping- except for me.
I bring small snacks (dialysis lowers blood sugars rapidly and without warning), books, watch TV, etc. and nothing at all passes those lousy 4 hours.  After 2 months in treatment, my appetite has finally returned, but nothing else!
No energy at ALL so if I get a spurt of energy, I take advantage of it to get things done.
I'm trying very hard to "figure out" how to get my life back in order, but no answers yet.  I hope they come soon

Cricket, if you figure out how to get life back in order, let me know how! What helped me was I kept busy on most days and exercised. I tried going back to college, rode my bike or walked to dialysis. Reading was hard to do while o dialysis ith the way my arm was and the lighting. It was usually boredom that put me to sleep or just how I made myself pass the time. I use to check my blood sugars as dialysis went along with bp and kept record of it. For me it did not drop till after dialysis, which was embarassing while I was grocery shopping and right at the check out. Although I did get some free snacks out of it, but still embarassing. Does your unit have the pedal exercise machine while you dialize? That may wear you out so you could sleep. Or ask for Xanax.

 :welcomesign;  Chris. This site has saved my sanity many times. I've been diabetic for 30 yrs. I'm 60. Sometimes the ups and downs of BS are worse than the dialysis. Hang in there you will adjust. If I ever get a transplant the first thng I am going to do is visit Jersey. My only GD lives in Brigandine.
