Hi,
I have just started hemodialysis on a home training path. This is my 2nd week, 4 days a week at this stage to firm up my fistula. Luckily, I have had the fistula for 3mths so it's not too bad - just needs firming up.
I think complications from HIV meeds have undone me but, I don't suppose it matters what brought me to this, more about what I do about it.
Everything has been OK up until this morning when a technician 'bombed' (penetrated) my venous access. Hurts like a bastard at the moment but my regular nurse assures me that the access is still good. Have another go tomorrow.

Uninterrupted in-center (self-care) hemodialysis since 1982 -- 34 YEARS on March 3, 2016 !!

No transplant.  Not yet, anyway.  Only decided to be listed on 11/9/06. Inactive at the moment.  ;)
I make films.

Just the facts: 70.0 kgs. (about 154 lbs.)
Treatment: Tue-Thur-Sat   5.5 hours, 2x/wk, 6 hours, 1x/wk
Dialysate flow (Qd)=600;  Blood pump speed(Qb)=315
Fresenius Optiflux-180 filter--without reuse
Fresenius 2008T dialysis machine
My KDOQI Nutrition (+/ -):  2,450 Calories, 84 grams Protein/day.

Born with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease
1995 - AV Fistula placed
Dec 7, 1999 cadaver transplant saved me from childhood dialysis!
10 transplant years = spleenectomy, gall bladder removed, liver biopsy, bone marrow aspiration.
July 27, 2010 Started dialysis for the first time ever.
June 21, 2011 2nd kidney nonrelated living donor
September 2013 Liver Cancer tumor.
October 2013 Ablation of liver tumor.
Now scans every 3 months to watch for new tumors.
Now Status 7 on the wait list for a liver.
How about another decade of solid health?

Yep, those infiltrations hurt like hell! It will take a while for the swelling to go down, too.  >:(

   :welcomesign;  Dave!  We got to move forward now and be proactive with your health. Worst thing people do, and without realizing it, is to look back to their past and try to figure out why.  Look forward now and concentrate on feeling better and living with this disease!  I know you are not looking forward to a life with D, but it is not the end of the world either.

You can get through this, Dave and you will be good at it too!  Just find out all your options and go with what you feel comfortable with.  You need to know that all at IHD are here for you!  You will learn alot from others who have been dealing with this for a long time. This is a fantastic site with some fantastic people!


Post any questions or rants you may have, we will understand, it's not like each of us havent do so!  LOL

Hi Dave, so glad you found us.  Stick around, you'll learn something everyday.  Didn't it feel better to tell us about your arm?  Well, it makes me feel better to talk to people who know..... who have been there.  Hope you get'er done tomorrow.
