On Sunday, May 15th, my husband received a cadeveric kidney transplant after 3 years and 10 days on the list! His creatanine as of yesterday is 1.2 ! The kidney started working immediately, producing about 2 litres the next day. We are so, so happy, and thankful to our donor, donor's family, doctors and staff of our hospital. Surgery lasted only 2 hours! He stayed in the hospital for only 4 days, and we are at our home since last night. What an experience! And the greatest birthday present we got (both of our birthdays are in the first half of May).

He is on CellCept, Prograf, and Prednisone (doctors told us he had to be on prednisone because of his antibodies, but that the dose will be lowered), Bactrim and Valcyte.

All in all, everything so far is running very smoothly, and we hope it continues that way. I have a feeling like we got the third member of our family: our little kidney bean. Such an emotional experience!

Girl meets boy with transplant, falls in love and then micromanages her way through the transplant and dialysis industry. Three years, two transplant centers and one NxStage machine later, boy gets a kidney at Johns Hopkins through a paired exchange two months after evaluation.  Donated kidney in June and went back to work after ten days.

Thank you all so much! @ Alisa: I think hospitals release patients sooner if all is going OK. I think the standard is about a week, sometimes more, sometimes less. Again, depends on the patient and how things are going. But not a month unless there is something in particular going on.
