Hi everyone... Im another daughter of a father who needs dialysis. Im worried for him. He is very nervous and doesn't want to do it- but is so uncomfortable and will die without it and maybe even with it... He is 81. I will post my questions and concerns in the general section...  |

Oh, that is so sad, being 81 and having to go thru all this crap!!! Glad you found us tho and I am sure there are plenty of members who can help you and your Dad. So, with that, to IHD, we are so glad you found us. |

to IHD. I'm sorry that your family is having to deal with ESRD and hope that you will find this site helpful. I'm pretty sure that you will..so many of us have.

Pyelonephritis (began at 8 mos old)
Home haemo 1980-1985 (self-cannulated with 15 gauge sharps)
Cadaveric transplant 1985
New upper-arm fistula April 2008
Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr. 2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

Hi Dadsdecision and welcome to IHD. Just have him "try" it and if he can't handle it he can always deny treatment. It is not like other life support where once you start you have to stay with it. Dialysis is a choice and you can start it and stop it. The easiest on him would be to get the permacath in the chest for dialysis. Hold off on the whole fistula thing until he decides one way or the other. Blessings on the road ahead. Rerun, Moderator  |

Thank you all so much- tomorrow we are going to the hospital--- can they do emergency dialysis? He doesnt have any ports or whatever they are called yet- Anyway, I feel better that we are at least going to hospital-the neph told us to go there and they will see what they can do  |

Hi DD and welcome to our group! Yes, a perma-cath can be placed and used the same day so emergency dialysis can be accomplished. Hopefully, your dad will feel much better after getting the toxins removed. And bless you for being there for your dad and willing to learn in order to help him. |

Greetings and Welcome DD. For sure, they will insert the permcath (its a relatively minor surgical procedure), and then no doubt dialyse a few hours later. I am sure he will feel stacks better afterwards (and so will you!). He is really blessed to have a loving and supportive care-giver and family around him - am sure that will bring about a lot of healing for him in itself. Good luck, am thinking of you.

What a wonderful daughter you are for helping your Dad in this tough time. I'm hoping the hospital visit helps your Dad. He will feel better when dialysis begins. But, it will always be his choice. Some here might share their experiences and why they choose dialysis or why they (or a family member) didn't. I'm glad you are here. We are all here for you.  Welcome to IHD. paris, Moderator

Thanks everyone.. he should be starting his first treatment this a.m. I hope everything goes well, or the way it's supposed to. I just don't want my dad to suffer anymore- his skin tears on his legs got infected and his legs were hurting so much- he was hallucinating all day yesterday and last night. He would be coherent for about 1-2 mins and then drift off into la la land. Very scary to watch- anyway, I appreciate the welcome and warm wishes!!
