I live with my boyfriend who was diagnosed with IGA nephropathy. His first nephrologist didn't know what to do and put him on chemotherapy for a few months which just made him feel worse along with the high doses of prednisone. Still ended up on dialysis less than a year after the chemo (Nov 2009). Now he is on the third nephrologist and second dialysis center. He is doing pretty good now that he is situated and enjoys the dialysis staff.
He was listed for cadaver transplant list May 2010. His dad was finally approved to give him a kidney last month. We are going to try to sit down this week to figure out a time to schedule it!!!! So excited! Just interested in learning all I can before we go through the transplant ourselves!

 Hi Lins..... IHD is a great place to gather info!! That is awesome that your boyfriends dad can donate!!

Diagnosed with PKD July 2002 (no family history)
Fistula placed April 2009
Placed on Transplant list April 2009
Started HD 10/6/10
Transplanted 1/6/11 (Chain Transplant My altruistic donor was "Becky from Chicago" , and DH Mike donated on my behalf and the chain continued...)

Pyelonephritis (began at 8 mos old)
Home haemo 1980-1985 (self-cannulated with 15 gauge sharps)
Cadaveric transplant 1985
New upper-arm fistula April 2008
Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr. 2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

Welcome and congratulations to your boyfriend for the upcoming kidney. How is it the first "nephrologist" didn't know what to do? I'm still trying to digest that? Chemotherapy for IgA nephropathy? Is that common?

From what I have been able to ask around and find, no chemo is not normal. He had to drive 3 hours to get IV chemo several times, and I really think it did more damage than anything.

Welcome to the site. Glad to hear of the upcoming transplant. I finally got on the list in August of this year. I'm sure you will find all the info you need here and maybe more.

There is a chemo drug named cytoxin that they use to try to slow the progession of ckd. I has three treatments of it five years ago. They stopped after three because it was making worse. But i was willing to try anything that they came up.

Welcome! I have gotten so much support here. My father was on probably the same treatment as your dad. Steroids and CellCept. He had a very hard time but is doing much better. GFR 45 is but doing "ok" so to say. My husband is on dialysis and I've learned a great deal here. Nice to "meet you".
