I got the email from Astellas yesterday about this. I'm not a good writer to do this.

I could certainly use it, but I'm iffy on how my becoming a paralegal is going to benefit the transplant community. I don't see myself as much of an advocate, I guess. I try to help on IHD with info when I've got it, but my instinct here at home is to stay as far as possible from the dialysis unit for as long as I can. If I ever manage to get healthy enough to really start running, I wouldn't mind being more of an advocate then. I've got my "I run on spare parts" logo ready for a t-shirt as soon as I can manage more than a slow jog!

The contest is about furthering your education "to make real differences in the lives of the people around them." I take that to mean your family, by getting education which will lead to being self supporting. No where does it say you have to improve the lives of other patients. C'mon JB, you can do it! Write something. It couldn't hurt to try. xoxoxo

From their contest rules - "Essays will be judged by a panel based on: (a) the compelling nature of the story; (b) the educational goals of the applicant and how those were affected by transplantation; and (c) the applicant's intention to positively impact the transplant community. The decision of the judges is final."
I've already got a degree, and was working when I got sick, so not so much with having my educational goals affected. I'm going back to get more schooling because I've been off the job market so long. If I could get a job without that, I would skip the tuition costs in a heartbeat!

I never read the rules LOL - seems like a tall order - recover from surgery, go back to school, we'll give you $5000 (barely a dent in tuition) and by the way, become a beacon of hope to others - No Problem!

A paralegal with knowledge of the entire transplant process might be a great advocate for someone having trouble navigating the approval process, getting needed medications when insurance runs out or working with someone whose job may be in jeopardy for being absent due to their condition.
