I have a question on making new buttonholes...... I am currently using a 17 ga sharp..... and they want to go to 16 ga now...... use those for a while and then go to the 15..... no problem......
but I want to start buttonholes in the future..... or whenever I can....... Do you guys start with the 17 ga to develop the buttonhole and then move up to the 16 and then the 15...... or do you just start making the buttonhole from the 15 ga....... what do you guys think is best......

I think it's best to wait until you are on the 15's, it gives more time for the Fistula to mature and "toughen" up......

You want to start the button holes with the same size you will be using regularly, that is, the 15 ga.

I agree that you ought to move up to the larger gauge sharps, and once you've done the 15's for a bit then switch to buttonholes.

Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr. 2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

I started with 15 sharps and used them for about three weeks. Then moved to 15 blunts. I am having no problem with my buttonholes.

I've been on dialysis for 2 years. I started my buttonholes about 6 mo. ago. They're using 14 gauge blunts on me. Every day they go in the same place. I have a little more freedom of movement in my arm that the needles are in.. It's a good thing.

I'm sorry, I didn't read the whole question. They were using 14 gauge sharps before we started the buttonholes. Going in a different place everyday was causing callouses and it was freaking me out. I use Emla-cream. mostly to keep from jumping when they put the needles in. 14 gauge needles seem to be as big around as a cocktail straw. I don't look when the are sticking me. Before I got started with the buttonholes, I was using, like I said 14 gauge needles. We went to button holes. At the time they only had 15 gauge blunts. They didn't even know that they had 14 gauge blunts. They went back to 14 gauge sharps because I'm a big fella and I needed the bigger exchange. I complained to the right people (everybody) and they eventually found a place to get the 15 gauge blunts. It sounds like you've been on dialysis for a relatively short time. It all comes with time and development.
