Yup...correct B.....now proper "FOOTBALL" is Rugby..either Union or league (and Aussie rules football qualifies as well)......that's a man's sport, not a overpaid babies sport, today's (so-called)(overpaid) soccer player's get a tap on the leg and they are out for a month (on full wages may I add).

Yes. Rugby League is the go! One of the most exciting sights is breaking the opponents' line by the use of lateral passing, a skill that has largely fallen away in American football. League players also do not need to wear the same amount of armour as medieval knights.

The average weight for an NFL Offensive linesman is 312 pounds.  I am afraid they would squash your thick neck rugby players without any pads.

You obviously know little about american football if you think the players do not have skills.  That my friend is fact.  If you look at the first post and the date you will know it coincides with the NFL season start.  The original post talks about the 2009 NFL champion Steelers and the hope of a repeat.   There should be no misunderstanding that.  You are free to start another thread for rugby.  Nobody is stopping you.  Why do you choose to post here?  What is the problem?

YLGuy calm down its only a bit of banter and what we are talking about are only games.

YLguy, you see this is technically an international site, so football means many different codes, if you don't state NFL than the rest of us take football to mean many different things, especially since in oz we have teams with similar names (ie steelers). and there are at least 3 other MAJOR INTERNATIONAL codes of football played.

Also, i know the US only opt to really participate in international sport once every four years but the rest of us have international comps all the time (nrl, union, soccor, cricket etc) (countries like UK, Ireland, Sth Africa, France, Korea, Japan, UAE, NZ, Australia, China, quite a few Sth American Countries, West Indies, India, Pakistan, EU, Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands just to name a few) and although for the most part we get along VERY WELL we all have a tendancy to partake in a bit of friendly slanging which is what was happening above.

Also i wonder how any footballer would feel (regardless of his code or country of origin) with 3 or 4 Tongans bearing down on him, without gridiron armour they'd drop the ball and scream in the other direction.

Kind of reminds me of the bank add with the american add agency trying to spruik a game between USA and Australia "Aussie rules football?" "well we think we rule football actually" bank guy just rolls his eyes.

so don't get your knickers in a bunch, it's just a game and people are just doing what we always do to opposing team...... IE HAVING A BIT OF FUN WITH THEM

And JennyC is right...we don't get many international sporting events here in the US, and that's a real shame.  I always loved international test cricket, and I miss international rugby.  You haven't lived until you've seen the Haka!

What is ginnip gonnop, i'm guessing a corruption of ping pong? The Hakka is great to watch the get so into it, watching the all blacks is very intimidating, even though i support the Aussies its great to watch. We honestly love almost any footy, we even watch the superbowl, we just don't understand it! it's also almost as slow as soccer with all the time outs. Just seems to be a  very complicated game. If someone has and easy gridiron explanation would be glad to hear it.

My son plays baseball, season has just finished he's in under 8's, our professional baseball isn't that huge over here and hockey is only minor leagues. still good to watch though when it's on tv

Gridiron is not really complicated.  Like any game, the offensive team tries to place the ball in the defense's territory to score.  The offense can move the ball by either throwing it down the field or running with it.  Funnily enough, feet don't often make contact with the ball, so I don't know why it is called "football."  There are two things that make gridiron seem complicated.  One, you have to remember that each member of a team has a specific role; only certain players can handle the ball at certain times.  It really is like chess in that type of movement is restricted.  The second thing that complicates it is that it is really overlawyered.  There is a preponderance of rules, and the rules seem to multiply year after year.  Not only that, but they also change each year.  It also tends to be overcoached; there is a coach for just about every position.  Too many people, too may rules, too many commercials.  I've been watching the NFL all my life and spend most of my childhood in the Astrodome watching the Oilers, so I love the game, but each year, it seems less fun and more corporate.

I don't know why, but the Brits are really hung up about this.  I was always a great fan of BBC 5 Live, especially on a Saturday when they'd have their sports programs on.  Every damn year, there would be a discussion about how the Yanks call their baseball championship "The World Series" and isn't that crazy since no other country participates.  The reason it is called the World Series is because it was originally sponsored by "The World" newspaper.  But besides all that, if you look at the lineups of most MLB teams, MANY players come from places like Venezuela and the Dominican Republic, and no team worth its salt doesn't have a Japanese player.

The Brits also get their knickers in a twist come Ryder Cup time.  Oh, and US Olympic Track and Field and basketball are the other favourite targets.  I suspect that they'll be foaming at the mouth at the World Cup!
