As I told you, I was asked to help with our unit's bulletin board.  Petey gave an excellent idea about 'Did you know?' and I have started to do that.   I made a sign with 'Did you know' and every now and then I will change the item underneath.
My first one is - ...that starfruit is toxic to dialysis patients and should not be eaten by them?

The next will be  ...that you need your binders (Phoslo, Tums) to keep the balance between phosphorus and calcium, since your kidneys can no longer do so?


Please help me by thinking up and adding items to this thread.   Keep it simple (very simple!) and informative.   One I am thinking of is to do with heart health, but I don't know how to word it yet.  I want to show that this is an area we have careful about in order to prolong our lives.

I am depending on my IHD family.  I know my supervisor asked me because she believes that I have access to much knowledge through our forum.

DID YOU KNOW that after transplant you CANNOT eat grapefruit, or items containing grapefruit,  due to the fact that it interacts with your anti-rejection meds!   DANGER!

or did you want to kep this strictly dialysis related?

that the more you know about your treatment and options, the better off you are on dialysis.

thee are several options for dialysis: Hemo, PD, and home hemo. Ask your doctor now.

Something you might put in about the binders thing on calcium and phosphorus are what the potential consequences of not having calcium and phosphorus within normal levels. 

I have seen too many that have labs out of whack in this area and since they do not feel the effects right away they almost ignore their labs in this area.

Did you know...  that large fluid gains between treatments is not healthy for your heart

Did you know... there is more than one treatment option!!  Educate yourself

Did you know....  you need to do dialysis to live not live to do dialysis!!!

Did you know...  that home hemodialysis is an option!!

Did you know that skipping treatments can kill you... the more dialysis the better.

          ( But who cares because you are going to die anyway! )   :rofl;

Did you know to keep a list of your medications with you at all times?

Did you know that you need to check your fistula three times a day to make sure it is still working and if there is a change to call your doctor.

DID YOU KNOW that you should NOT allow anyone to perform blood pressure checks, draw blood or give you shots in your fistula arm?

DO YOU KNOW about button holes?

DO YOU KNOW your correct dry weight?

DO YOU KNOW what each of the alarms on your dialysis machine mean?

DO YOU KNOW the symptoms for low/high blood pressure?

DO YOU KNOW the symptoms of "crashing"?


Are these any good?  I've never been on dialysis... sorry if I'm way off base.

This is great because it is not only a problem with anti-rejection meds, also Lipitor which I use.  There are many medications for which grapefruitis counterindicated.  I will put us one about grapefruit.


Keep'm coming, guys!  You are doing well.
Think of yourself helping dialysis patients a long way away in the Caribbean!

I am now thinking that I need another poster saying 'Do you know..?'

Did you know that Dr. Willem Kolff is considered the father of dialysis? This young Dutch physician constructed the first dialyzer (artificial kidney) in 1943.

That's REMARKABLE!!!!    I wonder if they have ever been sick despite that they have never missed a treatment?   Do you know?

I have had 2 fistuals-neither one worked
I have had 2 grafts the last one finally "took"
I had 3 different catheters from Nov. 06 - Dec. 08
Got on the transplant list - Halloween Day 2008

You can easily judge the character of others by how they treat those who they think can do nothing for them.    I BELIEVE THIS TO BE SOOOOO TRUE!

That patient is ME!  Yes I get sick periodically.  The usual things-colds, flus, etc.  However I think because I make every treatment regularly and do not skip I am staying pretty healthy. Plus the change to nocturnal has made a world of difference in my health!

Did you know that psyllium fiber capsules can bind to minerals like phosphorus?  Take some with your meals, and you can relieve your constipation and bind up some phosphorus at the same time.
