Nausea after dialysis
«
on:

Does anyone know what is going on? Right after I finish with my dialysis in the mornings, I feel like throwing up. In the last two months, it has gotten worst. Is it because I am too dehydrated? Or is it because the dialysis is not working? I told my clinic nurse and she didn't seem to know.

Try readjusting your dry weight up a bit and see how you feel. Being dehydrated would cause you to be sick. Does drinking water immediately after help?
The fluid is the first thing to check - if that doesn't help, there are a few other, rarer things that might be causing it, like allergies to heparin or the kidney that is used in the dialysis machine.
Your nurse sounds like an idiot if she didn't at least suggest adjusting your dry weight.

jdy123, Please go introduce yourself and tell us what kind of dialysis you are doing, and a little about yourself. We don't bite.

You might need to see what your blood work looks like too, to get an idea of your clearances.

I'm on the cycler and I have been doing dialyisis for 3 1/2 years. I still have some kidney function so I only dialyze every other night. It just seems like the last couple months, I get extremely nausaus in the morning after the dialysis. By 11 am, I am much better. As for my lab results, my nurse gets all bent out of shape if I try to look into my charts (to see how I am doing from month to month). They will only give me the blood work for the current month and don't explain it to me. If I complain too much about any problem, the doctor will just give me another precription or run another blood test!

That just steams my clams! That nurse should be helping you learn every aspect of your care! I would tell her,"Its my body- I have a right to know everything!" and you DO have that right!

Don't take no for an answer about your labs and your printouts. That's what I hated about hemo, having
to fight to take control of my care. Now that I'm in PD I get my full labs plus the simplified labs from
the dietitian, and I also get the full printout of the cycler history. How often do you see the nurse and/or
the doctor? The nurse should be working with you on your problems, although in my clinic the dr must
actually change the dry weight. Good luck.

I am also wondering if I am getting nausaus because I drain myself dry (using the manual drain after dialysis ends). I just don't like carrying any fluid in my body when I am up during the day. (I am afraid of gaining weight by leaving the dextrose in my body and having to absorb it.)

You have a right to see those lab results. Demand the original lab copy. If they won't explain it to you, there are plenty of sources right here to help you understand them. You can scan or type them in and we can tell you what every line means if they won't do it. There are sites on the web that will also give you an explanation of each test, too. You have to be your own best advocate - the doctors and nurses aren't going to know your symptoms like you do.
I've never done PD, so I don't have any good ideas for you on that. Hopefully, you can get some ideas from someone on here.

Is it possible your blood pressure is dropping once you get out of bed? That's what was happening to me... that can make you nauseas or light headed/dizzy. That's the only thing i can think of besides not enough fluid.. Either way, definitely a big deal that your nurse shouldn't be ignoring!

Thank you all for your response. I will be seeing the doctor next week and I am going to get to the bottom of this problem. I also have another question which I will post on a new thread.
