One of my daughter's potential donors, 2/6 antigen match, was told that if she got her blood pressure down that she could donate her kidney.  I thought that any type of hypertension issues, even if controlled with meds, prevented a person from being a donor.

I understand that high blood pressure is one of the top causes of kidney failure, if not the #1 cause, but if someone controls their blood pressure with meds and does not have any kidney damage can they donate a kidney?

Has anyone had a donor with med controlled blood pressure???

The potential donor told me this after the tranplant team left for the weekend....so I thought that I would check here.

Thanks!  Your input is always greatly appreciated.

I don't know abut living donors, but I know some transplant centers will take kidneys from deceased donors who have had BP problems. They are called 'extended criteria' organs. As long as they have done thorough testing on the donor (especially a 24 hour urine test) and they show no evidence of any damage, I would think it would be okay as long as they take the meds. Good luck! I hope this works out for Jaclyn!

My mom was recently rejected as a donor because of high blood pressure. The coordinator for UAB told me that they normally dont take people who are on high blood pressure medications.

My step father was going to try to donate to me when I was planning on just doing a kidney transplant and he has slightly high blood pressure but is on meds. He was allowed. Like i said, it probably depends on your center. How high the blood pressure is probably makes a difference too.
