Tomorrow's the big day

Thanks for all the advice. Thankfully, the heartburn has subsided. Yesterday's session didn't go nearly as well as the first. They decided to try starting my speed out at 350 this time. I immediately became lightheaded, extremely nauseous and felt his weird pressure in my head. They turned it back down to 250 thankfully. They did eventually ease me into 300 by the end without too much trouble. When I was weighed, we discovered that I had gained all the fluid back that they had taken off last time (which was only 500ml). When I left Tuesday, you could still see fluid build up in places, but they had just wanted to go easy on me then. Well, yesterday, they took off 3 pounds of fluid (1.3 liters I think? I'm still trying to get used to the conversions!). I did my 3 hour session yesterday too. At hour 2 I started getting restless. I also got that funny taste again, but that started at the beginning. By the end, it was worse than Tuesday! The worst thing about it is that it makes anything with artificial sweetener taste really bad now. Which stinks since I'm a diabetic! I left feeling a little weird and with a slight headache, but not so bad that I couldn't stop at the pharmacy on my way home.  By the time I got home though, oh lord!! I had such a horrendous headache that I had to lay in the dark with no sound and took 2 doses of Tylenol. I had even started throwing up. I tried taking a Vicoden for the headache, but it didn't stay down. I finally took a phenergan suppository and went to bed. The headache and nausea are gone today, but I'm still extremely tired.

I too now remember my first time was in the hospital and I too had problems like you are experiencing... but not the nausea.  So sorry sweetie.  But they also seem to be playing with your dry weight, and that can make you tired.  How is your blood pressure?  If it tends to drop off at the end, I could tell I was getting too dry.  Also, I would get a ringing in my ears.  Re: sweeteners, have you tried Stevia (herb) or Zylitol?  The later is made from fruit pectin and is low glicemic.  Just a thought.  Hope tomorrow is better!

Paddbear, have the doctors limited your fluid intake yet? Although if your nauseous and vomitting, your probably not eating and drinking very much. The less fluids you intake while on dialysis will help reduce the amount of build up and amount taken off at each session.

Which artificail sweetner are you using/prefer? Maybe switching to another one will help or nt even use one. Unfortunately I did not experience thatwith the artificial sweetners. As for he odd taste in your mouth when on dialysis, have you tried sucking on s/f hard candy like Lifesavers fruit or creme candies? I think there was a thread about that topic in here too about the odd taste.

For weight conversion, I just kept a journal of my weight in kg and multiplied it by 2.205 to get it in pounds and then rounded to the nearest hundreth. After awhile you will know it by heart in your brain when you get weighed. But I also kept a log of my glucose readings too along with the weight through treatment and before I left since I was driving.

Hopefully Saturday goes better.

Did the doc stop by this time?

Yes, my doctor finally stopped by. He answered all of my questions and checked my arm. He said my arm looks fine for being only 6 days post surgery. He said he wants to keep me at the hospital clinic until my graft is being used and shows no signs of problems, so it could be longer than 1 month. I also found out that my neph does not work at the clinic I'm going to later on. I could have sworn he said he did, but it turns out that was one of 2 of Dayton's Renal Physician's Inc. clinics that had free time slots. My neph is one of RPI's doctors; he just doesn't work at the clinic I'd rather go to. The other that is available is in a bad part of town. No thanks!

As for the sweeteners, the taste seems to affect any artificial kind. And they vary, depending on what I'm eating or drinking. I've never heard of Stevia, but it doesn't really matter because the stuff I eat and drink is pre-made by the manufacturers, and they don't use it.

I never tried stevia and probably won't since it is not easily available when I get coffee. I'm the old fashioned sweetner type from what was available when I was a kid, the taste of the most recent, Splenda is just not right.

I liked Splenda so much better than any of the artificial sweeteners until I started dialysis. Now I can't stand it because of the weird taste I get from dialysis.

I usually use2 packets in a 12 oz coffee, but with Splenda, 2 is not enough. It took5 1/2 to get close to the same sweetness of my old stuff and then it just didn't taste the same. I'd rather use Sugar Twin than Splenda if I had to choose the lesser of two evils in taste.

The Hungry Girl website just did a piece on stevia.  Apparently some companies are going to begin putting it into commercial products.
