Local dialysis patients send care packages to soldiers overseas

Steve Byford • Reader Submitted • December 26, 2008

Lauren Vroman is 24 years old and has been a dialysis patient for 5 years. Lauren's husband Andrew is currently serving with the United States Army in Bakava, Iraq. Andrew has been in Iraq since the end of September, and his tour of duty does not end until October 2009. The Fresenius Medical Care Oaklawn Dialysis Center in Marshall, Michigan decided to help make Andrew and his squadron's Christmas a little brighter by sending a care package. According to Lisa Grenon, Social Worker for Fresenius Medical Care,

"We put out a note at the dialysis center about what we were doing and we had an overwhelming response from both our staff and patients. We thought we would have 1 box to send the soldiers and we ended up having 4 large boxes full of food, goodies, toiletries, and socks. It was so fantastic for the patients to get involved and support this cause, they were excited to help."

The local VFW in Albion and Marshall became involved and helped purchase items and pay for shipping the packages. It truly is what Christmas is about, coming together to look out for others and letting them know we care.
