What goes around...

My little patient "Mary", who started dialysis last year with us at the age of 68...Sweetest woman EVER!!!!! When she first came to my clinic, brand new to dialysis, told me she didn't want to do Dialysis at all. I am quite the patient advocate, and explained to her that she had a choice, and her choice would be respected. She then said that she wanted to have treatment until she could watch someone die!!! > I thought she was crazy, and asked her what she meant. She said that she had seen her daughter raped, and killed in front of her MANY years ago. She had no other family left. :(The man was finally convicted, and sentanced to death. (We are in Texas of course.) Mary wanted to "watch him die", and wanted to stay alive long enough to do just that. (We are in Texas of course.) The justice system being what it is, it took 17 years of appeals, and holds to finally bring this sentance to fruition. The man was put to death last Friday night, in the presence of Mary. Mary died Saturday morning.

She got what she wanted, but I shutter when I think of the level of pain and anger that must have been associated with living those 17 years.
I live in a death penalty state, Virginia, but it's nothing like Texas. It has made me think a lot about the death penalty. If I was in a position of having to make the decision to put someone to death, I don't think I could do it, no matter how heinous the crime. I ask myself "what right do I have to kill another human being?" There is also the issue that our criminal prosecution system isn't perfect. What level of mistakes can we tolerate in a system that is so final? I guess my answer is none. A recent op-ed (Dec. 7th) in the Houston Chronicle noted:
"Dow [an anti-death penalty activist and professor at the University of Houston Law Center] believes that Texas juries have joined the national mainstream. The recent passage in Texas of the sentence of life without parole offers some jurors a satisfying alternative to death (which is why Rosenthal and other Texas district attorneys long opposed it).
What's more, say Dow and others, with the advent of highly publicized DNA-based exonerations, jurors across the country have become more concerned about imposing the death penalty. In August, Michael Blair was released after 14 years on Texas death row. DNA evidence cleared him of the 1993 rape of a 7-year-old girl."

She watched him rape and kill her daughter. He then confessed to both. This was done right in front of Mary, while she was tied up... There was no mistake of guilt. It was important to her.

pelagia,
I so agree with you on the DNA aspect of issues where innocent men have been SAVED.
But on the other hand i do think it should be used to help push a persons guilt and take away there right for a retrial ect ect.
DNA works well when going in either direction.
Adn know we have many video cameras on so many corners.
I dont get it when there is video PROOF and DNA and we still spend millions on trails of some of the worst people on earth. DNA plus Video = Guilty in my books and no trail needed..
though many will disagree even if they agree DNA can save an innocent man???

I am glad that Mary got her final wish, but like some others, feel very very sad that that is what her life became...
People all over the world live through horrible miseries, but chose to live on. God forbit if anything like this ever happened in my circle, I hope I have the strength to forgive, and not live with the wish so see someones death so I can be fulfilled. What if he died of natural causes first, would that be a let down?
P.S. Nurse, I am sorry you lost a dear patient.

There was a woman named Mary whose daughter was killed 14 years ago in her home by the other sister's ex-boyfriend - he was executed on Wed. Nov. 12. Here's the link.

It might be the same story. There's more info here

What a very sad story. I really don't know what I would thing in her place. I could not imagine being tied up and forced to watch such a thing, and live through it. So glade he was convicted and taken off the streets, at the very least. God be with you now, Mary. And be at peace now that you are with your daughter once again.
