Have to see an Oral surgeon

This seems weird and I was wondering if anyone else has heard of such a thing. I have had problems with my teeth for years they get brittle and chip and break easily, well I have had such a toothache so I decided to see a dentist. I spent an hour getting x rays and all the other fun stuff they do that causes more pain and we decide to pull two more teeth from my skull. So I went back later that day and they check my blood pressure said it was too high for him to pull my teeth and he refers me to an oral Surgeon. My question is what more can a oral surgeon do to pull teeth than a dentist can do? Except for a more expensive title, makes no sense to me. Any input would be appreciated.

I think because he iis a surgeon, he can deal with high blood pressure, etc.   As a surgeon, he is much more qualified and will take excellent care of you -- or he will answer to all of us!

Im sure Paris is correct. When I was younger, and before the kidneys failed, I was refered to an oral surgeon because of my diabetes alone. I was told oral surgeons can handle any type of medical emergency.

I agree, Sluff.  Before they would put me on "the list" I had to have a tooth pulled.  I also had to go to an oral surgeon and I thought it was BS!  After waiting in the waiting room for 2 hours (found out they didn't have me on the schedule) the pulling of the tooth was literally less than 5 minutes.

I need to go back to have two more pulled.  They are not "bad" teeth, they are just way in the back and there is no more room for them.  Food gets trapped behind them and they are pushing other teeth forward.  I'll wait until the summer, I think.

What Paris and everyone said...I hate this for you.  Check around, some of the oral surgeons are fairly reasonable.

Sluff, before they would put Len on the transplant list he had to have 4 back teeth cut out. He was admitted to Washington Hospital Center and the Oral Surgeon was great, because of travel time they admitted Len the night before and he was discharged the evening of the surgery after they knew he had stopped bleeding. They wanted the 4 teeth removed because they wee in pretty bad shape from dialysis and the dentist was having a hard time getting fillings to stay in and there was a lot of bone lost. Please let us know what you decide.

I've had a few emergency extractions in the dentists off but that was because they were badly infected.  I have had problems with my teethe for many years.  Partly from the kidney disease and partly from poor dental hygiene.  I now have to get all my teeth removed.  Well, they are trying to save a few lower front teeth but it's not looking good.  I have been using Act Restorative mouthwash.  According to my dentist it is the only mouthwash on the market can penetrate plaque.  I would recommend it for anyone who wants to try and hold onto their teeth. 

So, now I have to go to an oral surgeon partly because of my health and partly because of my phobia of dentists.  (I was terrorized by one as a kid.)  The oral surgeon I went to was not comfortable with doing it in the office and wants me to go to the hospital to do where they can monitor me better.

And remember to always take antibiotics before even going in for a cleaning or an exam!  I ask my Nephrologist for them because he knows what works for me better than the dentist. 

I had a cousin who was perfectly healthy die from an infection in his heart which was caused by an infected tooth.  He had that tooth extracted and didn't take antibiotics before or after.  The infection spread to his heart and there was nothing they could do for him.

I'm going to go on Tuesday and I hope they pull both at the same time and get it over with. My insurance pays 90% so I guess I'm lucky that way. Can't wait to get it over with I hate dentists. Thanks for all the information and timely response, it is greatly appreciated.

I have a phobia of dentists, however my new dental hygienist is super nice.  She stops cleaning when I have had enough and am panicking. She also stops when I say ouch even a little or flinch.  I told her I am a dental coward.  Bad experiences as a kid.  I hate to be taken into the dental chair and left there for even a little while.  It tends to spook me.  The dentist I had as a kid would do something, then leave for a half an hour, then come back.  I hate that!

Sounds like I have the same problem as you Sluff with the teeth and aches, but I can't afford to go anywhere. I've been told mine is due to my diaysis medications, dialysis, bone problems. Not until recently have ta couple teeth started to chip away to where you see red, but somewhat har. The pain gets intense and oragel does not help, brushing teeth makes it worse to try to help pain go away. Pain can last for hours. Bone specialist refered me to the dentistry school at the other transplant center in the city since they do discount service. She said I might be a good case study for them. Called them to clarify what it said on their website and they won't take me. Luckily this pain comes and goes and usually when I am at home and not in school.

I work in a Dental Clinic. It breaks my heart to hear people hate the dentist. So many people have had negative experiences, me included. There are many reasons that you may have been referred out. As a person ages the risks for fractures during an extraction increases. A simple extraction can become complicated if roots break off. You also have kidney disease which affects the bones and can make the fracture risk greater. Good Luck! I hope all goes well.

I still remember some awful days as a little kid in Primary School in the 50's.  One day, you would hear, "The dentist is coming!".  Children would have to line up, crying and almost passing out.  No one dealt with psychology in those days.  I don't even remember anyone comforting the children.  It seems they would just go in and he would just drag out teeth and there would be horrible screaming.   I never went to him (my dad was the principal, and my sisters were very protective of me). I would just go home (our home was on school property)and lay low until it all went away!

By the way, we had a visit from the Tooth Fairy!!  Chris's front teeth are out!  Sam's ringtone is Chris singing "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth!"  Will post picts very soon.  We only have the ones on Sam's camera phone, so we will take some more.  He is really cute with them out.

Thanks for this thread, all of you!  It made me aware that I have to take more care of my teeth.  I didn't realize that kidney disease could affect them.  "Knowledge is Power!"

Sluffbunny I hope all goes well , I will be sendig positive thoughts your way.  I've just had dental implant surgery as I lost some of my back teeth through grinding (caused by stress when my late husband had cancer) and had nothing to chew on .  It truly wasn't half as bad as I'd expected and I was awake throughout.  In fact the most painful bit was the bill (over £2000) 

Chris, I hate to think of you in pain, isn't there anyway you can get treatment, not even at your A&E or maybe a dental teaching hospital?.  I wish I could help

My sister, who is the sweetest girl in the whole world, shy as a kid and a real "pleaser"  (opposite of me, the eldest), used to try to bite the dentist's hand as he was coming in with the needle.  I preferred to skip the needle and get it done fast.  Dentistry in Jamaica when I was a kid was a pretty primitive affair as I recall it.

I had to go to an oral surgeon because I had a second row of teeth growing behind the row I already have.  Never said I was normal!!  Anyhow, the surgeon had to cut away all the gum to get them out and then he had to sow the gums back down.  It was YUK!  It took about four hours.  I then had to go have my wisdom teeth out and that was just as much fun.  About a month ago I had to have another two back teeth out and it was a walk in the park.  Took ten minutes and it was all over.  I think oral surgeons are just a little more refined about how they treat you.  My dentist wouldn't even touch me because of my renal problems.  Get them out though because they could infect your gums which is an even bigger problem.  Bad gums can create a multitude of problems.  You won't feel a thing and afterwards the only weird feeling is sticking your tongue where the tooth use to be.  All the best Sluff.  Will be interested to hear how it went! xx
