Hello, I am new to this forum and wanted to say 'Hi'  I have been on dialysis for almost a year. I started out in-clinic hemodialysis, then went to home dialysis for about 7 months. Since home hemo requires a partner, I enlisted the help of my husband. Unfortunately, it took up so much of his time that I decided to go back to in-clinic. So now I am going to the clinic 3 days a week. My kidney failure was congenital. I had constant kidney infections growing up and the scarring finally wiped out my kidneys. At least it wasn't a surprise, so I was able to prepare as much as possible  . I look forward to talking with others on dialysis - a lot of things going on I don't always understand!! SeaSand |

 SeaSand. Glad you found us. Sorry about having to go back to the clinic. I am a caregiver and did my husbands dialysis for 5 years. You'll find lots of information and support here. Hope to hear more from you.  |

Welcome SeaSand! I have been doing home hemo now for about 9 months, and my husband is my caregiver. The amount of time and dedication it requires from him always makes me feel guilty, I understand your decision completely. I hope to continue doing it at home, but would not blame him if he wanted to stop.
I think you'll like it here. The members are great. I look forward to seeing you on the boards.

Pyelonephritis (began at 8 mos old)
Home haemo 1980-1985 (self-cannulated with 15 gauge sharps)
Cadaveric transplant 1985
New upper-arm fistula April 2008
Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr. 2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

Uninterrupted in-center (self-care) hemodialysis since 1982 -- 34 YEARS on March 3, 2016 !! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No transplant. Not yet, anyway. Only decided to be listed on 11/9/06. Inactive at the moment.  I make films. Just the facts: 70.0 kgs. (about 154 lbs.) Treatment: Tue-Thur-Sat 5.5 hours, 2x/wk, 6 hours, 1x/wk Dialysate flow (Qd)=600; Blood pump speed(Qb)=315 Fresenius Optiflux-180 filter--without reuse Fresenius 2008T dialysis machine My KDOQI Nutrition (+/ -): 2,450 Calories, 84 grams Protein/day. "Living a life, not an apology." |

You sound like you have adjusted well to the lifestyle of dialysis. It's refreshing to hear that. Are you a candidate for transplant? Lost vision due to retinopathy 12/2005, 30 Laser Surg 2006
ESRD diagnosed 12/2006
03/2007 Fantastic Eye Surgeon in ND got my sight back and implanted lenses in both eyes, great distance & low reading.
Gortex 4/07. Started dialysis in ND 5/4/2007
Gortex clotted off Thanksgiving Week of 2007, was unclotted and promptly clotted off 1/2 hour later so Permacath Rt chest.
3/2008 move to NC to be close to children.
2 Step fistula, 05/08-elevated 06/08, using mid August.
Aug 5, 08, trained NxStage and Home on 9/3/2008.
Fistulagram 09/2008. In hospital 10/30/08, Bowel Obstruction.
Back to RAI-Latrobe In Center. No home hemo at this time.
