The woman was fined $300 and released. The officers seized the chorizo.

Now, that just sounds dirty.

From the article I get it that chorizo is a sausage. Is there something special about it that would make someone want to smuggle it across the border?

Not that I'm aware of.  We have some charizo in our fridge right now.  I have absolutely have no idea what it's made of.  It's a "soft sausage" if you will.  I've only had it in a breakfast taco.  Scramble your egg, then add some charizo and mix thoroughly.  Place egg/charizo mixture in soft flour or corn tortilla and eat.  Charizo is a little spicy.  That's the only way I've eaten it.  Not bad.

We have chorizo here - you can buy it anywhere - it's great with scrambled eggs or in a breakfast burrito. But the idea of eating something from a diaper - eek!
That photo says it all!

CHorizo and its many variations are a subject of Great passion int he southwest, and good, old style mexican chorizo is cheap in mexico, and sought after by American Afficianodos, ,and illegal to Import without USDA compliance at the original packing facility. Since a lot is still made "On the ranchero" so to speak, Chorizo Smuggling can be somewhat lucrative.

The Milwaukee Brewers baseball team before the bottom of the 7th inning have sausage races. For years it was the Bratwurst, Polish, Weiner and Italian. Two years ago they added the Chorizo but he doesn't wear a diaper when he runs...Boxman
