1 donor down :(

So my dad finally got out for his appointment (it only took the hospital 2 weeks to call him and get him in as opposed to my 2 months). He came out on Monday and everything seemed to be going welll. The tests went without a hitch and then he headed home that night. Thursday we got the results of the CT scan...and my seemingly easy donor dissapeared. It seems that he has kidney stones in his left kidney so he's disqualified to be a donor
. It was hard news, and my Dad is taking it pretty bad, but I'm more worried about the time lines now. UW only approves donors once a month and then it takes 6-8 weeks to plan the surgery. I don't want to sound ungrateful, because I know that I should be happy that I have options, but the thought of missing the approval deadline by a week and having to wait another month is just hell on me. And I don't understand why they can approve recipients weekyl but donors only monthly, it's the same group of people! So frustrating!
OK, thanks for the rant.

That's crazy! Sorry about your Dad. They declined my Husband because he "might someday, possibly, maybe" get kidney stones.
My clinic would only test one donor at a time, but as soon as one was declined they would schedule the next as soon as the donor was ready. Once my donor was accepted they said to pick a day, but that they only did transplants on the "1st Wednesday of the month". What? We were accepted the end of Sept and they said Oct was taken, so we grabbed Nov. 5th. I thought that was crazy, but when my friend had a donor accepted right after me they told him they didn't just to the 1st Wednesday. Whatever. Anyway, he was able to get Dec. 3rd or something. If they had gone by the other rule he would have had to wait until Feb. But then again he was 75, so maybe they made an acception. Who knows.
Keep on keeping on. Get your donors lined up.

Weird, I know people who have donated, even with kidney stones. Some centers just won't do it. You may decide to consider a different transplant hospital at some point. So sorry, I know it's such a disappointment.

I am guessing that recipients can go onto the cadaveric list and well there's also more recipients than donors (sadly).
Also donation is seen by some as an elective procedure, so there's less of a hurry to work through that. Here it's a monthly approval meeting as well.
Before you know it the month will be over. At least you have a goal to work towards and sooner rather than later you will be able to work through your options. That is a Good thing. Hang in there - when it's meant to happen it's meant to happen.

Gee I would think the mortality rate is a lot higher for hemodialysis patients than for kidney stones but what do I know?

Far out, sorry to hear that
I got declined to be a donor for Mike because apparently my kidney's aren't that great either! What are the odds?!
His Mum has been doing the tests for a year and 4 months. Still haven't finished.
