grannyM introduction

Hello, my name si grannyM, I am searching for information and found this site. I went to a health fair and had some blood work done. Recieved the results in the mail yesterday. Said my GFR was 10. Letter stated results of 15 is kidney failure. So I guess a 10 is not too good. Not sure what this all means or what I need to do next. A copy was sent to my family Dr so he should get it anyday now.
I am not sure what questions to even ask. How do I make an informed decision when I don't understand what I am getting into?
So I will read some posts.

Welcome. Once you are sent to see a Nephrologist you will find out lots more about your health. Yes, 10 is where "most" people begin dialysis. But hopefully you'll be referred to a good Nephrologist very soon and more tests will be run. My GFR was at 10 for a while and I still felt relaitvely good. I transplanted in Nov 2008 and at that time my GFR was 7. Again, other than being tired and run down, I still felt relatively good.
So happy you found us. Read, read, read! Ask any question you want. This site is filled with extremely experienced people who are more than happy to share their experiences!

Wow, you just found out. The only thing I can say is call your doc and get in to see him as soon as possable. Be prepaired to be admitted in the hospital and start dialysis right away. Some kidney docs don't like it getting that low. They might want a biopsy to see if they can figure out what caused it. Be prepaired to get overwhelmed time and time again. But I am so happy you found this site right off the bat. There is so much support and love in this site. I am sure everyone is more then willing to help you get though it in any way possable. Keep us updated and good luck.

Welcome, grannyM. Get yourself a good nephrologist, start eating renally (low sodium, low potassium, low phosphorus), and go from there. Come on back here and post often with all your questions and concerns. We'll be here for ya!

Welcome. You need to call your doctor and talk to him about those results. It depends on how you are feeling as to when you start dialysis and your blood work results. Good luck. Welcome to the site!

Wow! You have a lot to absorb in a short time. Like others have said, you may want to call your doctor and talk to him and not wait until Sept. But, I will say, some of us have been at a low GFR for awhile and aren't on dialysis yet. I have been around 14 for two years. Your other lab numbers will help the nephrologist determine when dialysis will begin. You found this site at a good time. Please keep asking all the questions you can think of so you will be really prepared when you see the doctor. There will be someone here that can answer almost anything you ask. Welcome to IHD. Keep posting and let us know how you are doing.

Many thnaks to everyone. I did talk to the Dr and that is the appointment given me. That is why I thought it may not be too bad because he was in no hurry. Nearest town with a kidney Dr is 90miles away. I would just have to pick one out the book. I thought I would let my family Dr refer me.
